5th Oil Analysis (Oil starts to breakdown?)

Well, well- Janusz and I must have touched some nerves out there. Obviously, I'm not as well educated/well read regarding motor oil chemistry/science as other forum members. I do not profess to be a petroleum engineer/distributor. I was, however; a VW/ASE master tech at the dealership level...

Loose Seat, VW says 'within specs'

Re: Loose Seat, VW says \'within specs\' Mine does the same thing. But they said they ordered the seat rail? That thing's welded to the floor pan if I recall. The older VW's had seat rail bushings that would break/wear/or slide off and this would make the exact same noise. I seem to recall...

5th Oil Analysis (Oil starts to breakdown?)

I'm with you 100% Janusz- well put. So what is so hard to understand about motor oil becoming thick after 46,000mi? Sometimes I wonder whats happened to common sense regarding some of the theories/assertations from apparently well educated/well spoken members. Oil gets dirty. Period. Lets put...

    1500 RPM Shudder getting worse!

It probibly doesn't have anything to do with your problem but why on earth would you be applying a load at 1500 rpm in 5th gear!? I would think any small displacement engine would want to shudder.

    new clutch doesnt work!!!Help

Good tip from Steve T, I've seen that happen a couple of times. Check it!! You didn't forget to re-install the pressure plate push-plate did you? I've done that a couple of times myself. It's a piece of stamped sheet metal that attatches to the pressure plate fingers in the center with a...

Be Kind to Your Turbocharger by.....

Steve, While warm ups and cool downs are generally seen as good for turbo longevity, I think your suggestions are a bit of overkill. My real world experience as a VW tech was that turbochargers on VW's diesel engines rarely failed. In fact in 12 years as a VW tech I saw only 2 turbo failures...

What's a normal amount of soot on the rear hatch

Re: What\'s a normal amount of soot on the rear hatch None. Which is why I bought another VW diesel. After owning many of the old technology VW diesels and dealing with soot on the back of the car(and subsequently my pants after reaching into the trunk or hatch), I was ready to buy a...

    2001 Option help please!

I personally couldn't tell a whole lot of difference between the monsoon and base audio system. Then again I don't think either a really great. I found the base system to be adequate when I installed a Kenwood head unit. I depends on what you want. My old Jetta had a $1800 sound system-...

18-24 month brake fluid change FREE VW service

Yes, I'm a big believer in brake fluid maintenance. GOOD REMINDER- THANKS Just make sure they actually flush the brake fluid from the resevoir to the calipers. Some techs get lazy and suck out the old fluid from the resevoir and put new in and thats it-NO GOOD. You can check by cracking a...

Timing Belt & Water Pump or just Timing Belt

Its not a bad idea to replace associated or exposed parts that will eventually need replacing when doing repairs in the same area of the vehicle. However, I think your probibly a little early. I've seen water pumps go at 10k and I've seen them last past 200k. If I were you I'd try to get by the...

    50K+ miles in 20 months

I've logged over 13k in 2.5 months in my '01 TDI Jetta. I use it primarily as a business car but also take trips(just go back from the beach- 58mpg downhill from the mountains). I doubt 1 million miles without at least some internal engine rebuilding is possible- but who knows? My 85 Jetta TD...

    What's wrong with Syntec "VW505" ??

Re: What\'s wrong with Syntec "VW505" ?? Great info everyone! Thanks. I feel ok about using the Syntec 5w-40 during the free service period. I'm still having trouble accepting the 10K interval and I know I said I had made up my mind a couple of months ago. My problem is that I know oil...

    What's wrong with Syntec "VW505" ??

What\'s wrong with Syntec "VW505" ?? I've noticed less than glowing opinions regarding the Castrol Syntec 5W-40 dealership only oil that carries the VW505 certification. Are the specs that bad? Or is it because it's so expensive and dealer only (I believe)? Why is this the only oil I've...

The Verdict Is In On A 40,000 Mile Fuel Filter Change Interval

There seems to be a bit of HYPOCRACY on this forum. I've notice some members get away with alot of personal attacks on other members. Yet I was involved with a thread a week or so ago that was closed due to comments that were very mild compared to what I'm reading in this thread and other...

    Taller Gearing?

Changing the final drive ratio would include changing the ring and pinion gears. The pinion gear is integral with the output shaft of the trans- this would require changing over the output shaft gear stack. The critical issue here is setting up the ring and pinion positions. This requires special...

    5K RPM with 300 miles

Your fine. The ancestors of this engine routinely saw engine speeds in excess of 5000K- their red line was about 5300 rpm or so. VW engines are tough and generally overbuilt. I definitely wouldn't worry about it!

    Installed in-dash radio/cd

It had a clarion sticker on the rear of the head units chassis. One thing I've heard is that you can't always trust the FM sensitivity specs because of a lack of standards through out the industry. (Remember when manufacturers would claim high amp output specs when they really were only the...

    Installed in-dash radio/cd

GeWilli: My factory head unit(radio only) was manufactured by Clarion and the radio reception was quite impressive. Some radios switch to mono very quickly as signal strength begins to fade to reduce static- this needs to be taken into consideration when comparing radio receptions. Justme...
