    1998 Jetta - S.E. Michigan

I mentioned it's not running right, it would be up to you to decide if you'd want to try driving it from MI to CA without figuring out what's wrong with it first. Got a couple messages requesting pictures, I will try to get some up in the next day or so. As far as price, I really have no...

    1998 Jetta - S.E. Michigan

I'm considering selling or parting out my '98 Jetta. Has about 190K miles on it. It runs, but recently it developed some kind of fuel delivery issue. (At least that's what I think it is...) I'm not going to give it away, but if anyone wants to make a reasonable offer I will consider it...

    TDI won't shut off

How many keys are on your key ring that has your car key on it? Just the VW key, or is there a whole bundle of keys? If you've got a couple pounds of keys hanging from your ignition switch, that's probably a good sign the ignition switch is junk... (again). What made it fail 2 years ago?

Rough idle & white smoke when cold

Based on my experiences with pre-TDI diesel VWs, I thought about all I would have to do would be to drive it and change the oil and timing belt at specified intervals and maybe throw some suspension parts at it.... In the ~40,000 miles I've had it I've put a clutch in it, throwout bearing, main...

Rough idle & white smoke when cold

hmm... air leak... Where would there be an air leak? The hoses that connect the injectors look pretty ratty... Would that have anything to do with my issue? Can I replace them using the same silicon tubing recommended by this forum to fix my turbo waste gate actuator?

Rough idle & white smoke when cold

My 6.7L cummins probably holds some heat until the next morning if it's parked in the garage. The 1.9L TDI parked outside in the wind? Probably not. I think you'd have more heat variation from the weather than from heat retained in the motor after it sits over night for 12 hours. Besides that...

Rough idle & white smoke when cold

I probably do need to get timing checked. But if it's just that the timing is off, why would it smoke more if it sits for say 3-4 days without being started vs. if it only sits overnight?

Rough idle & white smoke when cold

I will be more than slightly irritated if I'm starting to lose compression with less than 200K miles on the motor. I agree it could be IP timing. But since it smokes more after sitting for a while, I was thinking that maybe an eroded nozzle tip is letting extra fuel drip into the motor when...

Rough idle & white smoke when cold

1998 Jetta, 188K miles. It's been a little bit smokey and rough for a while now when it first starts in the morning, but it usually clears right up so I never thought much about it. Today when leaving work, it idled rough when I started it, then when I pulled out of the parking lot it was...

    Thanks for the constructive comment.

Changed air filter, now I get a check engine light

Thanks for asking, but yes, the vacuum line is plugged in. I'm not normally that dumb to forget to plug in the MAF sensor but I'm going to use the excuse that I was working on other stuff at the same time and also got distracted by my kids.... I put a clutch in this car, so I should be able...

    glow plug duration non consistent

LOL, I guess I won't have to worry about the A/C not shutting off when I'm about to overheat now... Thanks for the info, mine looks like it has a yellow band too.

Limp mode. What else can I try!?

Went through this myself, in the end lubing the wastegate actuator was what fixed it.

Changed air filter, now I get a check engine light

50??? Tried unhooking the battery too but that didn't help either. It probably just irritated the car and now it's going to take 100 cycles to make it go away. I think this car hates me.

    glow plug duration non consistent

hmm.. Going out to look again right now. The one I put in looks like this: http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=24_43&products_id=665 They have some '4 pin' sensors at idparts, but they say they're for A4s or B4 Passats. EDIT: I see it but how do I know which one to get...

Changed air filter, now I get a check engine light

I recently replaced my air filter, and when I did I forgot to plug in the MAF sensor and it threw a CEL. I figured no big deal, I plugged it in but now the check engine light still won't go away. It doesn't come on when I first start the car up, but it comes on almost immediately after I start...

    glow plug duration non consistent

Are you sure this is true for a '98? I replaced the coolant sensor, and there's only 2 wires going to it so I don't see how there can be 2 circuits going through that sensor. Is there some other temp sensor that a '98 uses to determine glow plug duration? I've also replaced all 4 glow plugs...

    metal coolant distribution pipe

Could someone please confirm if the one paramedick listed is the right coolant pipe for a '98 Jetta? Mine just cracked right in half (at the rust spot) right above the starter. I was also wondering if it's possible or worth while to just cobble a piece of plastic or rubber tubing in there...

'97 Jetta - love it or leave it?

I'm kind of in the same boat with my '98. The only reason I keep it around it that diesel is no longer $1.25 a gallon, so I really don't like putting it in the 6.7L Cummins just to go 75 miles a day to get to work. I do wrench on most everything I own myself, and I just put over $1000 of parts...

    glow plug duration non consistent

Thanks. I've already tried double (and triple, quadruple) cycling the glow plugs. It will eventually start but it's not 'happy'. I have vag-com, but I had to upgrade my laptop to Win XP64bit for work and my shareware old version doesn't work under that operating system. I will try to borrow...
