I find it so hard to tell which of my attempts at improving mpg is causing improved or worsened mpg. To make that more clear, I've played with different tire pressures, and generally found more pressure is better, but then the next week, mpgs are down. My wife's car has the stage 2 of the fix...
Cam sensor replaced. So far, the problem is fixed. The cam sensor evidently requires the removal of the timing belt to get to it. Fortunately, it's covered by my extended warranty, with a $100 deductible. Unfortunately, my extended warranty runs out in another 13,000 miles.
Anyone else with...
Dealer says a cam sensor is going. Not sure how a cam sensor is keeping the car from starting normally after warmed. Hopefully, this is not some sick Easter joke. I'd prefer the easter-egging be done by me, not the "professionals."
Wife took it to the dealer this morning. $100 deductible or something like that for diagnostics. I'll have to read what my extended warranty says, but I was under the impression there would be no cost for something that's under warranty. Nieve I guess.
I'm betting they can't reproduce the...
I think I may have stumbled upon the reason for not starting right away. Put the battery on my charger and low and behold, it has a low charge. It's the original battery, 3 years old, time to get a new one.
So, it still cranks over on a low battery charge, but I'm guessing not fast enough...
Mileage on car now: 56,400
Problem has resurfaced. I replaced the fuel filter (which was scheduled for the 60,000 mile service), but that didn't make the problem go away. It's become unpredictable on when the car will start normally, and when it cranks and cranks. First time my wife said it...
Ourisman VW in Laurel, MD says they've had 2 turbo failures on the new Passat in their shop. "Pretty good, only 2 failures in 2 years" He says. Mines still ticking (either a ticking time bomb or a watch that will last a while).
So, it's been a few months since I had the starting issues. This is what I can say:
The 20,000 mile service seems to have fixed the issue, and I haven't had a problem since. My guess is that it was a fuel filter issue. Probably some water/crap in it from 10,000 miles worth of fuel from...
Cold snap we're having now has started the clicking clutch syndrome. Wife heard it yesterday, and I heard it this morning. My bet is on the clutch return spring if there is one. Click happens when depressing the pedal about 1 inch. My guess is that the spring end connection to the pedal is...
FYI, I haven't had a problem on my car since the the 20,000 mile maintenance. Dealer said it was likely the fuel filter, which was replaced during the service. So, to me, that means in the future, if I start having the same problem of not starting: if it eventually starts on the second or...
I wonder how much of a cost delta there is between using an electric preheater to heat the engine, from say freezing temps, and the extra fuel necessary to heat the engine the same number of degrees without a preheater.
Under-inflated tires have an increased contact patch, and therefore will possibly hydroplane earlier, but the contact patch difference between 33 and 44 is negligible. Hydroplaning of course will only happen if it's raining hard, and I've learned from experience, hydroplaning will not happen if...
The 1000 mile guy taped up his grill for aerodynamics, but I don't know if I believe that it will improve the .29 drag coefficient that much. I think it helps keep the engine warmer, and he says he doesn't use the a/c, so no worries there. I'm more interested in the tires he's using. I don't...
On my trip out to Wisconsin and back this last week, I noticed that highway mpgs are greatly affected by speeds over 65mph (right foot as mentioned above), ambient air temperature, and wind speed & direction. When on a planned trip, I only have control over the vehicle speed and not the...
Syncros do wear out over time, especially if downshifting without double-clutching. Although I've only had this problem with 1st and 2nd synchros on my old Subaru. Replacing transmission bits is a whole lot more time and money than replacing a clutch and throwout bearing. Been there, done...
Rev matching, for those who don't know much about it, is not just for racers. It's an attempt to get the most years out of your clutch and transmission synchros.
OP: This is the first turbo vehicle I've owned, so I guess I didn't notice the latency that much, but I get what you're saying...
