Thanks to Greengeeker for some walk through and advice. It turned out the alternator shaft seized up and tore some chunks out of the case, and the adjoining voltage regulator caught fire and melted down. Chicken or egg, I dunno. Luckily only the serp belt took a hit and the roller on the same...

Pull pin, pause, throw towards opponents... So the wife is driving to work. Cold weather and the engine is a little louder than usual the past two days with a small sucking noise (but different from vacuum leak noise we had previous). About 15 miles into the drive, engine drops the full soot...

TSB: Front Fender Corrosion at Wheel Opening

Called in and they knew what I was asking, came in for pictures, was called back two weeks later with green light to repair/replace. Dropped off the car, and got it back 72 hours later with both new fenders. Didn't need to bring in TSB or anything.

Yeah I have a wife that never learned stick as well. But with the torque everyone says its a breeze and can just clutch into gear and never stall it. Good luck with whatever route you decide to go or person to see. Be glad you didn't dump money at the dealership yet.

First impressions everyone will say the 01M trans is toast. $3-4k replacement from factory. Remans are notorious for lasting under 50k miles and the common chatter is avoid completely, unless you get a killer deal on trans insurance and can spare the time to get yet another reman in 18 months...

IDParts.com pops to mind first. Plenty of 20k or 100k filter kits too. Good to keep a spare fuel filter in the trunk. ~$30. Not sure what a service department would charge, but IDParts will ship and deliver in just a few days.

Deafbug is still doing them. He's still doing class/work and is hard to chase down and fit in. Your best other options are greengeeker up 35N in Cambridge off the North Branch exit, or chug east on 90 over to Madison, WI area for jasonTDI. For timing belt work I consider all 3 'local' and...

    Auto Trans Durability

2002 01M Just under 180k. Got it at 70k and it always had park to reverse/drive delayed engagement. Chipped with sport mode right away. Trans fluid changed at 100k. Fine dust, no chunks on magnet. Near all highway miles. No other issues other than sharing with wife. Wife loves the car...

    Is my MK4 Special?

I seem to recall those Package II were decontented the year after when VW thought they were getting too close to competing with themself for the luxury market and losing sight of the economy market. The early 06 package II had all the goodies.

I'd lean more to mid-late April. But I haven't had a decent day trip road run for a bit now. Hehe, its only like 8 turns and 500 miles for me. Bring down some MN beer.

Nice pickup. A new 01M might last another 250k? Hows the interior and engine? Timing belt or intake fuzzed up?
