    Rainwater leak

Every time I see a post about wet floors, I have to chime in. I have an 01' wagon, with no S-roof, that was getting "gallons'' of water in the driver's floorboard with any decent rain. I checked all of the obvious things, and found some rather concerning ones, but I still had lots of water in...

    Catch can question.

I felt led to install a catch can in the beginning because the car was hydro-locked in at least 2 cylinders, and the PO just couldn't seem to tell me anything about what happened to the car. This is my first TDI, and I installed the catch can in hopes of being able to save the car and maybe...

    Catch can question.

I put a small catch can on my 99.5 Jetta TDI months ago. I got the car about a year ago with 350k miles on it and no history. The intercooler had a lot of oil in it, so I put a drain(screw) in and check it often. I still get some oil in the intercooler, but it's not at critical state yet. I...

Knock at idle and acceleration, goes away when off the throttle - Issue Solved

Interesting! I'd bet money that the helicoils had something to do with it. How did you get the rest of the bolt out? Was the 'body' of the bolt sticking up enough to grab? I'm wondering if it started backing out and the head broke off from hitting the underside of the valve cover.

Slow, dragging start ... I need some advice!

Well, I'm just going to tell you ... I put it off until the very end because of how pricey the Bosch starters are. I found a remanned starter online by searching the Bosch part #. I only paid $300 for this car, and I still could not make myself by a new Bosch, so I bought the used/remanned...

Slow, dragging start ... I need some advice!

Months later ............... Slow, dragging start never really went away. I bought a starter and the car starts 'perfectly', hot or cold.

For sure. I took it out right away. It had never been hooked up because the car's connector was a 2 pin and the pump was a 4 pin, but there were two coils of wire lying close that means they may have tried to get it to run or at least planned on it. I put an ALH proper unit in it and never...

You may be right about the hydrolock, I just don't know. I cross-referenced the number on the pump, and it was a gasoline pump(well, Google said it was anyway...I'm just assuming it to be true). I removed it and put an ALH-proper pickup with only two wires for the the fuel level sender. I'm...

That's what I was thinking too. Pulling the head will be my last resort, but I will if it seems that it is necessary at some point. Another random question though....If rings are worn, will they hold oil on top of the piston for a hydrolock condition? This car had been sitting for at least 3...

Now that's really interesting. I wonder if it would show on a compression test?

That's all good information. I have not put 1,000 miles on it since I changed the t-belt, and when I did that, I also replaced the valve cover gasket(which I will NEVER do again)...anyway, it was leaking badly and was as hard as a rock. I changed the oil when I first got the car, and have...

That makes complete and total sense, but I am curious as to what symptoms the car might display(running). If I pull this head at some point, I will definitely check piston protrusion, but having just done the T-belt job, I will hold off as long as I can. Would a slightly bent rod show up on a...

Hey IndigoBlueWagon. Thanks for joining in. I am concerned about the oil in the intercooler. I don't know if you have been able to read my last post above, but when I first drained the intercooler(before I ever got the car started) I nearly filled a soda can. I was pretty concerned...

Hi Nero Morg. Thank you for responding. For starters, no, I did not pull the head. I bought the car with full intentions of pulling the trans to put in a 2.0 wagon I have because of the terribly high RPM's when highway driving. Before I tear one apart though, I always try to make sure it's...

Hello to all. I've performed most of the important 'basic' maintenance on my 99.5 Jetta that I bought almost a year ago. It was hydralocked when I got it, and I was able to get it running. It doesn't not seem to have suffered any damage from what I can tell. It doesn't smoke, although it...

    Injector rebuild

Oh, I agree 100%. I'd love to find one with those miles. I just meant that if you didn't do any performance upgrades for a few years, you'd still be able to do it later even with the added miles. I have one gasser beetle that I picked up for $225 with just over 100k miles. It runs so...

    Injector rebuild

Dave would say to fix it the cheapest, CORRECT way to keep it going for now. Follow Dave's plan, and once you've stacked up some cash, you can do anything you want to the car. The best thing is that the car will still be a good 'toy' option if you wait a year or two to really mod it. Take...

A New ALH valve cover GASKET ONLY>?

I bought a cheap Ebay gasket before I did the T-belt on my 99.5. I had never researched replacing the valve cover gasket on the ALH, so I had no idea what I was getting into. The back of this engine was/is covered with oil, and I'm sure it came from the valve cover. The gasket was rock hard...

    Tensioner tabs won’t align ...

When you loosened the cam bolt, did you tap the sprocket from the back side so that it ''unseated'' from the taper on the end of the cam? If not, back the cam sprocket bolt out several turns until you see a gap between it and the sprocket. The sprocket will not be loose at this point and will...

    ALH valve cover gasket removal...

Bought a rubber gasket from "chEYE-na", but didn't realize the valve cover was born with the gasket attached to it's spine. I used a little gasket maker on the valve cover side, but nothing on the head side except for the corners at the cam. If it doesn't seal well, I'll just buy a new one...
