Anyone heard of Powertdi in Poland?

Looking at getting an 11mm pump for my ALH and PowerTDI has good pricing on them. My only question: which version do I get for a US-spec, 2001 ALH? They list three options for ALH: Edit: Thinking about this a little more, maybe there is a different option that would better suit my current...

    Adapter plate design considerations

Fiddled around with getting the bell housing centered up last weekend, but didn't get very far. The cheap DTI and mag base I have doesn't have the best repeatability, results were all over the map until I figured out how to manually lock the fine tune "feature" on the mag base. I was also busy...

My TDI is making a “ knocking sound?”

Take an oil sample and send it to an oil analysis lab to see if there are high amounts of wear metals in the oil. If bottom end damage was caused by low oil then there should be elevated levels of metals in the oil.

Getting 14MPG City Driving with ALH

Bad injectors don’t necessarily make a noticeable bad running engine if you’re not used to ALH’s. I had a set of unknown injectors in mine and it smoked a lot and ran a bit rougher, but not horrible. However, EGT’s were through the roof (1300°F or more doing 65mph on flat ground). I swapped them...

    Vcds on Mac?

I used VirtualBox VM running Windows 10 on my 2014 MacBook Air for several years, it worked but was slow and really chewed through the battery. I currently run Bootcamp on my Intel MacBook Pro and it works great, the best part is that I can access all the scan files and logs I save in Windows...

    Adapter plate design considerations

Ordered a set of 0.008” offset dowel pins from Grannas Racing, hopefully I’ll be able to install them over the weekend between Christmas and New Years. A few parts are supposed to arrive a little later so the engine will probably go back in the weekend after.

    ALH Persistent Coolant Leak

Engine out, found my aluminum housing with block off plate buried in a box of random parts. Unfortunately it sticks too far off the back of the cylinder head (at least 1/2" beyond the vacuum pump) to fit with enough clearance to the firewall. I cleaned up the plastic housing, reseated the...

    Gauges

I've used Auber Instruments gauges in several vehicles with some success, my current one appears to be on the fritz after 5 years though. Agreed on the probe placement, the closer you can get it to the center of the exhaust stream just before the turbo the more accurate your reading will be.

    Does Winter Fuel Lower MPG?

After averaging 48-52mpg all summer with an ALH Jetta, the combination of a ski rack, studded snow tires and cold temps have brought that down to 42mpg on my last two fill ups. Fuel mileage on my TDI LandCruiser doesn't usually change by that much seasonally, but it will still lose a couple of...

    Adapter plate design considerations

Thanks for the input! Not sure why I didn't find offset dowel pins in 10mm flavor when I searched for them before, but great to know they exist. Going to get a more accurate measurement and try those ones from Grannas Racing. I'd love to dial it in vertically, but I can't realistically upend...

    Adapter plate design considerations

Pulled the engine out for some work last weekend, took the opportunity to mount a little dial test indicator to the flywheel and bolt my spare bell housing and transmission case up to measure runout. Came up with about 0.019", which is a bit disappointing. Going to try measuring again to see if...

Why Do You Run The Oil You Run?

I run T6 5W-40 in my ALH, consecutive oil analysis was good and recommended 13k km oil change intervals. I usually do it at 10k since my engine sees much harder use than most (lugging around a 2.5ton LandCruiser). I used the Fram synthetic 5W-40 in both my AHU's without issue, my brother runs T6...

    General Swap Malarky

I usually use OEM parts for my Toyota and they tend to be quite good quality, but for aftermarket parts or non vehicle specific stuff I would absolutely agree. I can't seem to get more than a year out of a pair of windshield wipers, even the "high quality" ones. My 2.5 year old battery is on its...

Found the ideal tool for inner CV joint circlip

Just looked those up: Snap-On seems to think they're worth $260, and I found a pair on eBay for north of $400! They'd better be awfully good snap ring pliers!

    ALH Persistent Coolant Leak

New o-ring is on the way, in two weeks I'll be pulling the engine for some other work and will swap on the aluminum housing.
