I wonder what the mechanic meant by "checking the transmission flanges". Wouldn't he have done that while replacing axles?
Like XLXD mentioned - I would look for any wear in the suspension/steering parts. Might also consider a tire (front) - that has some damage that manifests itself only at a...
Had given this a thought myself when my ole 2001 Golf kept going into the dreaded and emasculating "limp mode".. A new actuator eventually solved the problem and I sold the car a few months ago working fine. 365k miles on original turbo.
Report back with your mileage if you could. Always...
Maybe the brake line fitting to the caliper vary enough that going back to the OEM line set might provide adequate clearance? I'd guess that the dimensions of the fitting, and even the line orientation might be different for the SS line vs. the rubber OEM type.
I did a rack job a couple of years ago on my 2001 golf and offer the following thoughts...
Could you put it up on some ramps and have someone right and left the wheel while you inspect movement of the steering gear? Or I wonder if it might be as simple as a worn stabilizer bar bushing...
I...
Did you check for voltage to the glow plugs? Fairly easy to do...and they do stay lite for a while after the car has started. Check all 4 caps to be sure you have all of them juiced up. You can also check the resistance at each glow plug...If I remember right they should show like 1.4 ohm or...
2005 Golf (BEW) 5 spd. manual 180k miles
Bought this back about 15k miles ago and it had always had a vibration at the 1800 and 3600 rpm engine speed. The plastic dash parts would buzz - and I learned to keep the engine out of these rpm ranges. Many on this forum had suggested replacing the...
Yeah Rembrant... see you point. Works better on rears.
I guess you could get the other tire off the ground and idle the engine in 1st while you listen to the bearing through the hub but can't say I ever went to the trouble.
To truly detect a failing wheel bearing I've relied on spinning the rotor after removing the tire and any brake pad drag... then hold a screwdriver on the hub and putting the handle to your ear will tell you if the bearing is "rough"... maybe saving you from replacing a good bearing. Never had...
Found all kinds of tranny oil had leaked from my tranny... have cleaned it off and suspect that the metal tranny cover on the drivers side has rusted. Anyone know if this is a common occurrence?
I've had them so tight that I broke a 1/2 inch socket extension attached on my breaker bar. Was leaning on it with about a 2 foot breaker bar at the time.
Maybe use 6 point socket on the rest and use never-seize on them when you reinstall.
Next week I hit 350k miles on my 2001 Golf.
I replaced all bushings/shocks/springs at 200k which was a good decision..restored ride and handling to like better than new (Bilstein TC).
Kinda amazingly.. original clutch and turbo...with no problems save the turbo actuator replacement.
I've spent...
Buy two hose clamps and place them with screw mechanism 180 degrees to each other...thereby neutrally balanced. Newton will be proud of ya...
Wish I'd thought of this earlier...jeez...
Thanks all...
In some internet seeking frustration I finally called up my local foreign parts store and ordered up a left front axle - from IMPEX.
Here's the link if anyone is interested..

They also have the higher priced...
I'm looking at replacement options for the whole axle - but the old one is a crappy rebuilt one - and don't want to replace it with crap.
I talked with Raxle today - they indicated that particular axle was only produced for 14 months - and without an original core to send back they aren't...
I had good results cleaning the intake manifold by using a shop vac blowing air into the manifold while shoving a propane torch into the casting....ignition and plenty of oxygen means burn baby burn. Fun to....Probably an air hose would work as well....
2001 Golf.
I just rolled 334 miles. Original turbo and clutch, axles..... go figure.
Many wheel bearings and several timing belts - but engine has only got new timing belts and intake cleaning.
It's not liking the cold winter starts this year - but still runs great - esp. after a suspension...
A quick search on this forum will find the proper torque specs on the front suspension bolts - and they differ of course if you are tightening the 3 ball joint nuts - versus the bolts that hinge the control arm from the frame. I usually don't torque them but get them tight - but if you have...
I've sprayed white lithium grease every year or so into the area that holds the wiper mechanism... as I noticed some power issues with the wiping action. Kinda spray it until you feel you must have hit something...
Another thing I've found is that if they are frozen onto the windshield - or...
My 2001 Golf flex pipe (turbo to the cat) was leaking so bad I thought additional brain damage might occur. I also had a leaking steering rack so needed to drop the subframe which gave me access to the piping without having to work around it.
I ended up getting the flex pipe section from ID...
