    Rusty Rockers

Hey, my 02 TDI has 502 thousand Kms and is still running well except, the rocker panels are in rough shape (rust started at the front of the front doors as is usually the case and has worked its way back to the rear wheel well). I've been patching it up over the years to keep it at least half...

Stuck hood latch - MK4 Golf

Tried that - no luck. I think that part works, it's the secondary release that is busted or seized.

Stuck hood latch - MK4 Golf

After I get it open is the key here. No amount of prying and poking has worked so have resorted to cutting. Am just able to get a hacksaw blade between the part connected to the hood and the latch part that rotates (or is supposed to rotate) to release the hood. About half way thru but it's...

Stuck hood latch - MK4 Golf

I think the first stage of the release (pull the lever in the cabin) works as the hood moved up a bit as usual. It's the second stage (pulling the handle under the hood) that doesn't seem to unhook the latch mechanism. I'm surprised you can reach the latch from under the car but I'll give it a...

Had some welding done, now won't start

I'd like to see a technical explanation as to why disconnecting the battery would help protect the vehicle's electronics. It seems to me that leaving the battery connected provides a path to ground for transient spikes that may be induced by the welder (as has been mentioned upthread). Heck...

Stuck hood latch - MK4 Golf

Help! I can't get the hood latch to release. The cable release (from inside the cabin) seems mushy but I think it is not stuck. When I pull on the release handle under the hood, it seems to move the latch mechanism a little but not enough for the hood to be raised. I tried removing the three...

    ALH Alternator Replacement

Mozambiquer, does that procedure remove the need to detach the AC comp. and remove the tensioner & fan? Does the alternator just come straight out? P2B, yeah the service position seems more complicated to me and, more difficult to reassemble - don't really know having not done either. Still...

    ALH Alternator Replacement

Thanks, yea it also makes a whirring noise so it sounds like bearings alright. But what do you mean by "service position"? And thank you for the recommendation on an OEM replacement.

    ALH Alternator Replacement

Hey, my alternator gets v hot and smokes after a long drive (alternator light not on though). Anyhow, appears to need replacement and a search for a how to turned up this thread: https://forums.tdiclub.com/index.php?threads/alternator-re-re-how-to.99516/ It's an old thread though and the...

    MK4 Lower Control Arm Replacement

Thanks for confirming there is an opening to spray the "nut". I think I'll try at least that and, if the nut(s) don't break loose, proceed. If they do, I think I'll just take it and the replacement parts to a local mechanic who has done work for me before.

    MK4 Lower Control Arm Replacement

So then, it may be a nut, it may be a cone shaped thing, it may be welded on, it may be glued on. If it's a cone shape, how do you get a grip on it (through the hole drilled) and, if it's glued on, can it still be welded ( and w/o glueing the bolt to the nut threads) ? Oh, and what if you...

    MK4 Lower Control Arm Replacement

Glued? Great! Using a 2" hole saw on steel with a hand drill in an awkward position sounds pretty grim. :( I also understand the ball joint nut may not break loose (and the joint spins in the socket). I'd like to try it but methinks maybe I'll just buy the control arm assemblies from...

    MK4 Lower Control Arm Replacement

Thanks Vince, it sounds worth a try. Is there any way to spray penetrating fluid on the nut(s)? How does dropping the subframe help?

    MK4 Lower Control Arm Replacement

Hey, I'm contemplating trying to replace the lower control arms & ball joints myself but am concerned I may wind up in a situation I can't easily correct. Specifically, I understand the nut for the rear bushing is hidden in the subframe and therefore inaccessible. I have heard instances where...

    Gasoline in my 2014 TDI!!!

If you still have the gas/diesel you pumped out, take a sample for analysis. That may be useful in determining how much damage may have been done to the fuel pump and, with any liability or warranty issues.

I would if I had one but I don't so I can't. Or something like that....

Rad fan removed - now no AC

Thanks ghohouston. Yes, my AC has never stopped working, even with the main rad fan seized up. The AC has also worked well I guess since the AC rad fan is working. I have just found out though that the AC rad fan does not turn at low speed when the ignition/cabin blower switch/AC switch are...

Rad fan removed - now no AC

My main radiator fan has been inoperative (doesn't run, rough bearings or brushes?) for several years now with no overheating issues. So, finally decided to R&R it but do not yet have a replacement. Removed the fan (couldn't get the damn electrical connector unplugged so just clipped and tied...
