This is the latest from Union of Concerned Scientists. Electric cars are cleaner even from cradle to grave and they will get even better as the grid shifts away from coal to renewables.

There is a Toyota study on the efficiency from well to wheel of different drivetrain technology. At its best the well to wheel of an ICE is 14% vs 30% for an EV. No matter how you cut it (well to wheel or gas tank to wheel) the EV is more efficient.

I charge my EV at 0.10$ per kWh and I am in SoCal. I charge between 10pm and 8am at the cheapest rate. Only an idiot would charge at peak hours. I did the math and my electric car costs me way less than my diesel car for every 1000 miles of driving.
If VW offers me a decent buyback then I will...
I am with you. I am lucky to have a 2010 who value has declined before this fiasco. I hardly ever drive it now that I have an electric car for my daily commute. It is just a back up cat for that occasionally long drive.
I will hold on to the for as long as I can w/o doing that retro-fit and...
The company was evidently concerned that actually meeting the federal emissions standards would degrade the power of the engines, which it marketed as comparable in performance to gasoline engines. Meeting the standard would also undercut the fuel efficiency that is one of the main selling...
I think the 2015 Golfs are easier to fix because they have SCR (DEF). The fix is probably to increase the injection of ad blue into the exhaust stream to clean NOx emissions. That is my thought on it, but it could be a more involved ECU flash.

The EPA website uses g/mile. The spec for tier 2 bin 5 is 0.05 g/mile at 50k and 0.07 g/mile at 120k.

Look up on autotrader. There are a ton of 328d that have been turned in after a one year lease. I was looking for one about a year ago and found a lot of them. A lot are former corporate lease cars. I never got one though. Glad I did not. Once this fiasco with VW is resolved, I am getting rid of...
Exactly. If it was feasible to pass US stringent NOx when the standard kicked in 2009, then they would have done it anyway. The U.S. NOx was 0.05 g/mi in 2009. At that time Europe was operating at Euro 5 NOx of 0.29 g/mi. VW, foolishly, wanted to become the number 1 auto maker by volume. To...
You did not mention that you strictly wanted a manual. If you want a manual and a diesel, then stick with the TDI. I wouldn't buy a diesel after this fiasco. Diesels are not a viable long term option in CA. The only other option that is semi fun with a stick and gas engine with good mileage is...
It is my understanding that diesels with bigger engines emit less NOx than diesels with small engines. 4 banger 2 liter diesels emit more NOx than 6 cylinder 3 liter and above engines. I would like to see if the 328d meets the NOx standard in the U.S.

If you live in CA, I suggest you scrap your diesel purchase altogether. I would highly suggest getting a 2016 Volt or even a 2015 Volt. We got a 2015 Volt at an $8500 discount from MSRP. We will get $1500 back from CA and $7500 tax credit. It is an amazing machine. I like it a lot, but I like my...
According to the European study posted here, BMW is the best at using SCR+LNT+EGR at reducing NOx. They are one of the few diesel cars to come well below Euro 6 NOx standards. But our standard is 2.6 times more stringent than the Euro one. I assume that BMW is meeting that. But who knows for...

This is what I got from reading the article too. SCR+LNT+EGR is the only likely option to pass Euro 6 stringent 0.129 g/mile. The U.S. Tier 2 bin 5 standard is 0.05 g/mile which is 2.6 times more stringent than...
Before this recent fiasco I priced my 2010 TDI with 48,000 miles and I got 11,500 for it. That will give pittance as a down payment on a 70K+ Tesla Model S. I was shocked by how badly these cars devalue.

To support what you are saying. In 1984 Congress passed a bill declaring drinking age 21. States did not have to comply, but those that did not lost 15% of their highway funds. Every state in the union ended up complying. Why? 25% of a state's budget comes from the federal government.
