    Replacing ALH? With what?

My '02 is getting pretty rough - been running with no power steering (bypassed and removed) and no a/c for a few years, body is getting rough and a few other minor problems. What do you fellow ALH'ers plan on replacing your car with? I had a rental Golfwagen with AWD last January in Vancouver...

    Leaking power steering fluid...

No idea. I never got that far into diagnosing. Either way it looked like it was going to require dropping the subframe to fix and I could forsee snapped bolts thanks to all the salt the car has seen over the years. I'm shocked I'm still driving the car. Last year I removed the power...

    Leaking power steering fluid...

For what it's worth, I've been driving my '02 without power steering for a few years without issue other than a little difficulty parking. I ran a shorter belt and by-passed the power steering pump. I've got both the a/c and power steering bypassed now as the a/c doesn't work either and it's...

So has anyone run 12a refrigerant long term with success?

Stupid question, but leafs whereabouts are you? Assuming you're in the Toronto area? I'm in Ottawa and I've got a few cans of R134 I've collected over the years. I'm headed to Newmarket/Holland Landing area for Canada Day week if that helps you. Could sell you a few cans if that works for...

    Question about battery warning light.

I haven't heard of the car shutting off because it's not charging. The computer likely knows the battery voltage and will shut down when that gets too low. I know this because I drove on battery power until the computer shut down (everything else shut down too but the motor kept running)...

Cooling fan comes on when key turned off

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=500813 Mine turned out to be blown fuse. I forget which one it was but replaced it and it fixed the problem.

    Adjustment after Rear Caliper Replacement

I found that it helps to crank the parking brake a whole bunch of times. I'm not sure the order matters though but I would crank the parking brake about 20-30 times before bleeding the system. I've replace rear calipers a few times and found I couldn't get a hard pedal without cranking the...

    Power Steering Rack Replacement

I get what you're saying. I do all my own work but rack replacement is a ****ty job. Did one on my wife's '02 Altima with a junkyard rack (twice as much work) and on a rust-belt car with limited life I wouldn't bother doing it again but here I am 3+ years after the fact. These VW's certainly...

    Power Steering Rack Replacement

Here's the thread: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=388759 The Continental part number is 4060380 for the 38" belt but as I said in that thread a 39" belt would probably work better. 39" part number is 4060390. I got mine from Rockauto but you could probably get it locally using...

    Power Steering Rack Replacement

I posted that in another thread a while back. Let me dig that up.

    Power Steering Rack Replacement

FWIW, I've been running without power steering for at least a couple of years on my '02 with no ill effects other than stronger arms. I've bypassed the pump with a shorter belt that only turns the alternator and tensioner (a/c seems to be not working now too). I didn't think I'd keep the car...

Rear axle beam source ideally in Canada

Check your local dealer. I almost bought one from idparts but the local dealer was actually significantly cheaper (for my 2002 though). And being brand new I didn't have to worry about getting the old bushings out.

1500 Watt inverter load on the alternator?

FWIW, I ran a full size fridge and a deep freezer off a $500 Harbor Freight Predator 2000 inverter generator for about 40 hours a couple of years ago when we had some tornadoes. Actually I shut it off at night but it was enough to keep the food from spoiling. I had heard good things about...

Timing Belt on ALH....risky DIY job?

I printed off all the instructions from one of the write ups and followed it step by step, page by page and it went smoothly. I wouldn't hesitate to do it as long as you have the proper tools. And I'm no pro either. It was my first timing belt.

    2000 Honda Insight ALH swap/5speed

That's a pretty sweet swap. I shared the Craigslist add on Facebook as I have lots of car friends all over the U.S. Good luck with the sale. I'd love to pick up something like this if the timing were better.

What tires for 02 ALH Tdi?

I've had Bridgestone Ecopia EP-422 (I think that's the right number) on my car for a few years. Way better mileage than the previous tires (Dunlop Star-Specs) but that's not surprising. Absolutely useless in the snow on the FWD Jetta but I had an AWD Golf rental in Vancouver in January with...

'02 Jetta TDI with an appetite for alternators

This is not just a VW issue. I had issues with reman alternators in my old '97 Taurus SHO. The originals would last 80-100k miles and replacements were lucky to get 20k. On my ALH, the pulley has been the only problem and since I swapped it with a decent one from my id parts, it hasn't failed...

///// How long will a mark iv jetta run without the alternator working? ////

Back in 2014 I think it was I drove from Refrew, Ontario to Maxwell, Ontario (about 390 km or about 4.5 hrs) on battery power after the alternator pulley decided to separate. I drove with the e-brake pulled one click to disable the daytime running lights for most of the way (the annoying chime...
