She's always left a few drops on the pavement. Never have dug deep enough to find the source. Haven't done a compression test - don't have an adapter for glow plug holes.

Might have figured it out
I might have talked myself through this one.
Pulled the serp belt - grinding buzz gone. Pulleys feel fine except for alternator. New one and tools ordered from idparts.
Swapped maf with old one that had low power issues and I had kept for some reason. Surging...
My 01 golf with 320k miles on it is running super rough, stumbling a at idle, smoking, has very little power and a strange grinding buzz. Here is a video.

This is what I've done so far.
-checked vag com - no fault codes...
I searched for a bit but couldn't find a good answer on this one.
I'll be replacing the Timing Belt on my 2001 Golf TDI soon at 258,000 mi. - still has original turbo. I'm debating replacing the turbo while I have everything torn apart. I've heard what might be a squeal from the turbo during...
N75 Easy Diagnosis and autopsy - another fixed TDI testimonial
Figured I'd post my limp mode story as well. Thanks to Gofaster's writeup and all the other info in this post, I got started in the right direction.
I had replaced all my vacuum/pressure lines with the silicone 2 years ago, so I...
Sorry, can't figure out the image posting thing. Maybe I don't have the right permissions or something cause I don't see the "Manage Attachments" button that the FAQ says I should have.
One other option
I came up with another option for this intake hose section. I used to have the radiator hose fix. It blew out after 2 years, so I tried to find a better option this time.
In researching this, I found that McMaster-Carr has 100 psi hydraulic hose with a 6" bend radius -...
Anyone have one they need to part with? My wife's car lost it's muffler in a fender bender and my mufflerectomy fix is a bit too noisy for her. Thanks.
Resolution???
I have the exact same symptoms as Wonk - hard start, white smoke, wandering timing, no codes, etc. I've been searching the forums for 2 hours and this is as close as I'm getting.
So... Wonk, did you get it fixed? Or does anyone know if it got resolved and how.
98 Jetta 160k mi...
My 98 Jetta began to have cold start issues a few weeks ago and thanks to this thread I was able to find the blown 50 amp glow plug fuse. Many thanks!
BTW - Releasing the plastic clips and dropping the fuse panel down makes this job much easier and saves arm skin.
Question: Why did this...
My head is enroute to Franko6. He's been super helpful.
I'm going to clean the intake, replace the TB and all pulleys, replace the WP, and drop the oil pan to make sure I have all the lifter pieces out. Is there anything else I should replace at 160k mi? Hopefully it will be good to go for...
Checked out the damage today @ lunch. One of the lifters on cyl 3 was worn completely thru and the cam lobe totally destroyed. Every thing else looks pretty good. There is very slight scoring on the cam bearings, but I think they're OK. I'm not sure about the other lifters. They don't seem...
Here's the current report from the dealership. "There is a hole worn through one of my lifters and I need a new head." I think this is something I can take care of myself, so I'm going to tow it home over the weekend.
Once I get it home and check the things that paramedick talked about, I'm...
Over lunch the dealer was kind enough to let me check my car out - sure is nice work inside instead out in the freezing cold darkness with only a headlamp. The timing belt is tight and looks in perfect condiditon. I was also able to verify that the timing is correct. The valve cover is still...
Thanks everyone for your ideas. I tried them all as best I could, gave up, and took it to the stealership. They confirmed what I had checked previously - the timing and belt tension are OK. They say that it is blowing compression out the intake and have never seen one like this before...
Finally found it. One of the fender bolts near the right from headlight had worked loose and would only vibrate when the hood was down and pressing on it at a wierd angle.
