FWIW, I fashioned a crank holding tool from a piece of Auto trans ring gear when I did my 5spd swap. It took a little fudging around, but I got it to fit tight in the sight hole and hold the flywheel at TDC. The crank will not budge, it removes one source of possible error.
I've seen adjustable dowel pins on Summit's website. I don't know if they have the size you are looking for, google "adjustable 10mm dowel pin. I think they are two piece, inner and outer. With the inner being concentric ground and threaded with a lock screw.
JDub, I like that idea. I have one of those, haven't used it in years. I may pull my seat and make something secure for it. Temporarily permanent, or vice versa. I'll take a pic when I'm done, now I can save that California Golf for summer months.
If it's anything like mine, it's deleted because it leaks. However, you can go on Idparts website and find everything you need and the part numbers. Has the EGR cooler been deleted? That would make a difference what hoses are used.
