You're probably getting the blue smoke while you're driving, you just don't see it. Ask a friend to drive your car, and follow him in another car. You'll see it.
If you had a runaway, get that turbo changed or rebuilt. It's going to happen again at some point.
i gutted my cat at one point. Didn't notice any power or mileage improvement. The only thing i noticed is the smell. Smelled like an old diesel truck. I got another used cat, and installed it, just to get rid of the smell. it was bad
On my BEW it's a failed actuator. Definitely. Just started soaking bolts in penetrating oil. Don't want to have to remove the turbo from the car.
When i had my ALH, i blew an actuator too, and i swear it was overboosting. Maybe it wasn't. I agree, that would be a poor, non fault-tolerant...
Nobody has any ideas what would cause significant underboost?
Sounds like the vanes are stuck open. The actuator pulls to open the vanes, so a dead actuator should stick the vanes closed, and overboost, not underboost
Hey everybody,
I just replaced my '01 jetta with an '04, so i'm learning all sorts of stuff about the BEW.
I got a deal on the car because it was going into limp mode, and the seller took it to the dealer and was quoted like $2500 to replace the turbo. I've had that problem several times...
Just replaced my 300k '01 Jetta with an 152k '04 Jetta. With 152k on them, the OEM shocks are way too shot for me.
I put Bilstein Sport's on my '01 like 8 years ago, and even after 175k on them, they're still in great shape, and the car is still tight. Now, in this instance, i would...
thanks!
In-tank pump was replaced recently.
Can i replace the GP's with less-fragile ones? should i?
What's a "tandem pump"?
yes, i've already realized that the injectors are WAY more expensive....
I've had my 2001 jetta for 10 years, and put about 250k on it myself (has 306k on it) I do all my own maintenance & repair.
I recently got offered a super-clean 2004 Jetta with 155k for a decent price from a friend, which keeps going into limp mode. My friend doesn't do any of his own...
Ok, last update on this issue, since i'm selling my car. (and getting a grey 2004 with 1/2 as many miles)
Since the last update, i've changed the head gasket (due to coolant leakage into the oil) put in a complete timing belt kit (since i was only 20k away) while i was in there. Checked /...
Timing is advanced, about halfway between the blue and green lines.
IQ is 2.2. I know that's kind of low. i already tried increasing into the normal range it a few months ago, and it made the mileage worse, so i keep it low on purpose.
Haven't had a chance to check the cams yet. I...
Ok everybody, as i promised, i have the latest mileage report after the turbo vane cleaning and thermostat change. I wanted to run a few tanks of fuel (8 to be exact) to make sure i normalize any tank-to-tank variation.
I have also been running heavy doses of Powerservice DIESEL KLEEN for...
A crack in the casting anywhere will weep oil, and gravity will bring it to the bottom. Try cleaning it off really good with brake cleaner, and then get under there while it's idling with a good flashlight and a mirror on a stick. that's how i found mine.
Be super-careful with jackstands...
When you disassembled your center section from the manifold, did you have to hammer on the center housing at all to separate it from the manifold?
I cracked mine by "tapping" a bit too hard. Looked like the exact same return-line leak as you have. Took me quite a while to figure out what had...
This thread has some good stuff regarding the cluster part number.
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=335665
The immo delete isn't done on the cluster, it's done on the ECU.
the best way to describe it, is that with the immo delete, the immo still barfs all over the key, but the...
