    Burning Oil 2015 TDI

I'd take a used oil sample and have it analyzed ASAP. The two effects could very well be related if coolant is being burned and/or getting into the oil itself. It could also be possible that a quart every 5000 miles is normal for this particular engine when driven hard.

    Winter oil viscosity

If you were doing mostly short trips in cold weather, you'd see some benefit by going to a thinner, 0w-30/5w-30/0w-40 grade in cold weather. In this case you'd only really notice an improvement in cold starts and more engine responsiveness during the warm up phase. TS

TDI Used Oil Lab Analyses Results & Discussions

Tootall424, In my professional opinion, and having interpreted the results of hundreds of oil analyses over the past 23 years, you have a coolant leak that is degrading the lubricating properties of the oil and causing abnormal wear. I'd have an analysis done by another lab like Oil Analyzers...

I would keep an eye on that lead level though! That's coming from the soft bearing overlays and is generally indicative of corrosive or chemical wear, or an oil that's much too thin for the application. It could also be tied to the parts you had replaced, but again it should drop down to 1-3 ppm...

TDI Used Oil Lab Analyses Results & Discussions

Mr Lion, Spectrographic oil analysis can't discern whether it's abrasive silicon, or polymeric silicon(e) in the used oil sample. What you're seeing here is normal chemical leaching of silicone from new seals and/or gaskets. It causes no harm and will dissipate after a few more oil changes If...

    TDI Race Oil

I was thinking it's probably reading 148C, which is ~ +300F? Of course that would be VERY high for an equilibrium sump temp.

oil choices for 2015 Golf Sport Wagon?

It would take a LOT of testing under carefully controlled conditions to come close to determining the "best", VW 504/507 oil. As a practical matter, their are only a few different additives chemistries being used by every Approved VW 504/507 oil on the market today. So for the most part, you'd...

    TDI Race Oil

You sure the oil temps were only 148F? That number sounds VERY low for any fully warmed up engine, even under easy street use. Does your engine have an OEM thermostat? What temp does it open at? Thanks, TS

From their Spec sheet, the Schaeffers "8008" is described as a "Mid-SAPS" formulation, which they list as suitable for both VW 502/505.00 AND VW 504/507. Ash content is given as 0.8%. I've never seen an explicit ash limit for the 504/507 oils, except that they meet the generic "ACEA C3"...

Breaking News: New VAG 504.00 & 507.00 standards

Well the VW 505.01 oils never impressed us very much. Folks have been getting much better wear numbers by using the latest, HD diesel oil Spec (currently "CK-4/SN"), in PD motors calling for VW 502.00/505.01. I have had fine results using the VW Spec stuff in VW & Audi gas engines that call for...

MrRogers, If you have a functional DPF, understand that the metallic ash levels of the latest HD diesel oils (CK-4 or CJ-4), is STILL relatively high @1.0%. That's 66% higher than most VW 507.00 formulations, which typically come in ~ @0.6%. The bottom line is that all things being equal, you...

oil types and Higher pressure (QUESTION) HIGHLY MODIFIED NEEDS

I would definitely recommend going to an xw-50, synthetic diesel oil or at least a thicker 15w-40 synthetic with a greater, high temp/high shear (HTHS), viscosity, in mild to hot weather. However, compared to a 5w-40 I would not expect to see a dramatic increase in oil pressure. Given your very...

    Gearbox Oil

Any liquid lubricant will degrade over time due to heat & oxidation. With manual transaxle fluids, you may also notice degraded shifting characteristics when the fluid reaches the end of its' service life.... TS

TDI Used Oil Lab Analyses Results & Discussions

James, I figured the 5w-30 would be best for a VW/Audi gas engine and my Subaru Outback, but one of the 40wt versions would probably give you even less wear in a high mileage TDI diesel. I'm assuming they are all using the same basic additive chemistry and similar base oil blends....The 5w-30...

James, Amsoil now blends an SAE 5w-30, "CK-4/SN" rated, gas & HD diesel oil in their "Max Duty" product line. I just got in a four gallon case of the stuff to use in several vehicles, including my 2012, Audi S5 coupe w/ the 4.2L, DI V8. The stuff isn't cheap however.... I'm trying it in the...

"507, 505, Amsoil, blah blah blah"....but what VISCOSITY?

Old Rattler, I don't want to get off on another big oil discussion here, but the Spec requirements are just the minimum standard you have to meet. The top tier synthetics tend to go above and beyond these Specs. As just one example, none of the standard engine sequence tests required for the...
