As I've read more and more reports coming in from 3.0 owners and their experiences with the "fix", I've wondered if there is a north-south (ie warm/cold weather) difference. It seemed anecdotally, and not tracked scientifically, that the warmer the climate the fewer complaints owners had. That...
Saying “I’m taking my toys and going home” doesn’t really do much to support your argument. In fact, there is much that is true about what you are saying - that to the extent post-“fix” owners can validate their experiences scientifically, it is more likely to be persuasive.
But there are two...
Mythdoc, we hear you’re “really bored” with the “plight of the speculators.” But in the spirit of the after-Festivus glow and Airing of Grievances, some of us are “really bored” with your condescending dismissal of reports post-“fix” of diminished performance.
We get it. Some aspects of...
Can you share with us whether you've arrived at these numbers via calculation vs OBC? Some say the OBC values cannot be compared reliably pre- vs. post-fix. If your hand-calculated MPG is that terrible post-fix, that is seriously atrocious.
To lighten the mood, I will add that I was at my VW dealer today for my 60k service. The shuttle driver gave me a ride in a brand new Atlas. It made me happy that, despite everything I dislike about the settlement, at least they didn't force me to take an Atlas as a replacement. I was hugely...
I don’t think YOU are whining, and if I didn’t make that clear enough in the post above, I’m sorry
Mythdoc, I did plenty of whining in the first months and beyond, so no apologies needed. As Scott Adams says in his recent book, Win Bigly, we humans make our decisions almost entirely on emotion...

Mythdoc, I can't quite figure out your angle on this. Much of what you say is pragmatic and accurate, but at the same time you are defensive of VW and scornful of those who feel aggrieved. Above I snipped some comments that are of interest.
1. You are right. No one has to get the fix...
Frank, to mollify those who say that the Touareg's MFD (display) cannot be relied upon to determine whether the vehicle's MPG has dropped, would you be willing to hand-calculate your post-fix mileage, either on your current tank or the next?
Two posters on this site - Dyehead and Lionel-Hutz - are among those who have posted bad outcomes following the "fix." According to sigs, both are in California. Any possibility that meeting Cali air quality standards makes the fix affect performance differently than in non-Cali air quality...
Nash, will you please repost here after you've driven it a while? Maybe 500 miles or so? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested in your impressions. Your first impression is very discouraging - so only hope is that the car can "learn" your driving preferences and/or grow back its...
Thanks for the responses. Honestly, a lot of what was said is syllogistic...MFI cannot be relied upon for an apples-to-apples, before-vs-after comparison because everyone knows MFI is not reliable.
But one explanation stands out - without knowing MFI methodology for determining MPG, you can't...
Truly not trying to be antagonistic here. I get that calculating MPG by taking odometer reading and dividing by fuel burned is a more accurate determinant of MPG. I also get that comparing pre-"fix" calculations by hand with post-fix MFI readings tells little about relative MPG pre- vs...
Any chance that the transmission "learns" the driver's habits and returns at least some of the previous torque? I'd be patient if I knew it might take a few tanks of fuel to get it back to the performance I've enjoyed.
Also: is it stated anywhere in the 3.0 materials we owners received from VW a deadline by which we must submit to the "fix"? I have read through the materials multiple times, and also searched the online sites, and I cannot find it anywhere.
To make sure my question is clear, for those of us...
MBQ, if you had it to do over, would you still have pulled the trigger on the "fix" this early, rather than waiting?
My plan has been to wait and enjoy my 3.0 Gen 2 in its un"fixed" state until the last possible moment. The downsides of doing so I guess are that VW gets to hold on to the...
I am with you on that, 28 while towing something heavy seems a stretch.
The winter blend diesel fuel factor continues to have my curiosity. I presume that up here in the North, our diesel has already been reformulated for winter. I have filled up twice in the last couple of weeks. My fuel...
Assuming 10% reduction solely due to winter fuel is accurate, 10% of 28 is 2.8. He reports 4-5mpg reduction.
You are right, my experience does vary. Must be either my light winter foot or the mild winters we have up here in the Snowy North. :) I could understand some decline in the dead of a...
Sorry, I call BS on suddenly losing 4-5 mpg due to winter fuel. My winter/summer MPG differential has always been minimal. I agree, though, that we do not yet have a critical mass of "fixed" 3.0s from which to draw reliable conclusions. I'm in no hurry to have mine done.
Ugh. If others' experiences mirror yours this is really disturbing. Once we all learned that VW's "fix" was approved and there would be no buy-back, I've resigned myself to accept what is largely on faith that the "fix" would be just that - not noticeable. A 3-4 mpg drop is unacceptable...
