Another no start, but this one is tricky.

We made sure the engine was at tdc through flywheel, the cam slot looked completely horizontal, and you could see the pin hole centered through pump sprocket. if it was even one tooth off on the belt, it would have been obvious. And can't run vcds until it starts, which it won't at the moment...

Another no start, but this one is tricky.

Nope and nope. We just checked timing of the belt and everything seems correct, but i know the p.o. had pulled the pump and i wonder if he didnt time it right when he reconnected it to the sprocket. Like it's retarded and so marginal its hard to start until the electronics take over.

Another no start, but this one is tricky.

2002 tdi gradually getting harder to start, randomly won't start even when warm. All the basics gone through, lots of fuel getting to injectors, shutter valve open. Absolutely should start because it has fuel, air, and compression. Sounds like a timing issue. The intermittent no start sounds...

    Strange starting problem

That was checked. opened and closed it manually no diff. We'll run the VCDS asap and see if that's it.

    Strange starting problem

That's cool, I didn't know that. But here's the thing: if it were an adjustment issue like this, wouldn't it always be hard to start? While the computer is supposed to monitor things and an electrical fault should show up as a CEL, the way it fires fine one time and the next time very hard to...

    Strange starting problem

Ive got a a VCDS, but how is it used to check timing? Isn't that a mechanical measurement with a dial gauge off the ass of the IP?

    Strange starting problem

Hey all, Ive got a 2002 with 360k km that started giving starting problems a few months ago, getting progressively worse. It doesn't seem to matter of its warm or cold, maybe more often cold, but there's times when it starts right up, other times when it won't or I have to crank and crank to get...

What's up with VW parking brake cables?

But this is the strange part about all this: the cables aren't broken. Neither is a caliper dragging on the side with the "longer" cable. And it's weird that both vehicles show the same problem. Stuck cable I get, broken cable I get, but one working cable protruding 1 1/2" longer than the other...

What's up with VW parking brake cables?

Thanks for this, I thought the cables just hung more or less exposed except where they come in at the console. I'll have a look.

What's up with VW parking brake cables?

I have two VW TDIs, Mk4 and Mk5, and each have developed the same problem where one parking brake cable becomes so long the equalizer is on such an angle the other cable falls off. It's not that one pad set is more worn than the other. Nothing has broken, but does that mean I need to replace the...

    DSG transmission acting funky

Maybe I'll need to look deeper online, as all I've found so far are like 2 grand for the earlier ones; for some reason the 7 speed ones seem a lot less expensive.

    DSG transmission acting funky

It's not a matter of being cheap, even if 2 grand for a part is insane. It's more because I've been a tech of one type of another most of my life and learned to troubleshoot down to the component level, not just yank out major parts and toss them. Sometimes it can be done, sometimes it can't...

    DSG transmission acting funky

You're assuming negativity when there wasn't any. It was a legit question, that maybe my questions would be better answered elsewhere. Sometimes there are few answers because the expertise required exceeds that available. There's no disrespect intended in that. And if you read the thread you'll...

    DSG transmission acting funky

I've tried to find service info, exploded diagram etc of the mechatronic itself. It should be serviceable. It's crazy to swap out the whole component when there's serviceable parts on it. But having no luck finding out which circuits control reverse. There's tons of online info on ordinary valve...

    DSG transmission acting funky

No ideas? Is this not the appropriate forum for discussing tranny issues? Ive read several online accounts that say reverse issues are likely mechatronic problems, but without any details. If it is the mechatronic I'd like to service it myself as parts are available, rather than replacing the...

    DSG transmission acting funky

Finally got a code today. P2711 Unexpected Mechanical gear disengagement. Not surprising as I had put it into reverse and nothing happened until restart the car. It's done that a few times. Other times it went into limp mode while driving forward, though it's never not gone into forward gears.

    DSG transmission acting funky

What specifically would I upload? When I scan for error codes it says no codes found, or something like that. I'm wondering if the plug to the tranny needs cleaning. The car also needs a new DMF, but it's just starting to make noise when cold, and I have no idea when the oil/filter was last...

    DSG transmission acting funky

OK, I dug out my VCDS which I never needed with my Jetta TDI, scanned it, and again, no codes anywhere. I haven't updated the VCDS in 3 year but that shouldn't matter given that the car is a 2005?
