World Famous Midlands BioFuels GTG - July 12th, 2014

I'm still planing to be there bright and early for the morning part, have head back to Charlotte around lunchtime though.. No work needed on car, just coming to hang out and pick up 5gal of B100; if the lift is free I might like to use it for a few minutes to rotate my tires front to back.

    Follow-up Question re scheduled maintenance

What the others said. Replace the WP, Tensioners, rollers, etc. and ALL the TTY bolts (they're not reusable)

    HP and TQ

No question a DSG can shift faster, but that is not the sole measure of the fun factor. ;)

how bad is it for the TDI engine if you drive short distances?

And my thoughts are; an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Just got a used 2011 Sportwagen - can't pair bluetooth phone?

Eggscellent! Thanks for reporting back. I hadn't heard of that, but it makes sense, maybe forced the module to re-initialize to the CAN-Bus.

how bad is it for the TDI engine if you drive short distances?

IBW, That's kind of my driving pattern as well. I do a week or so of around town short trips (10 or 15, 3-7 mile trips), then a 50-300 mile trip once every 10-14 days. I think that's probably a good safe mix, but if I all I did was 3-7 mile trips for a month I'd probably be a bit concerned...

how bad is it for the TDI engine if you drive short distances?

No question you can see the warm up routines kick in to bring the emission gear up to temp, I see 500-600F (post turbo) in just a 1-2 minutes of driving. But, in my experience, an active regen (by monitoring EGT's with Scangauge and VCDS) takes at least 10 minutes and at times as much as 20...

Just got a used 2011 Sportwagen - can't pair bluetooth phone?

Could be a simple coding issue then, for some reason perhaps the controller isn't configured or is just disabled. Try and find someone with VCDS to scan the modules, that will tell you exactly the state of the BT module, the codings for BT are pretty obvious (there are also a number of HOW-TO's...

Just got a used 2011 Sportwagen - can't pair bluetooth phone?

No issues with iThings. All iPhones from the 3GS to the 5S have paired quickly and reliably with my car (and any other device for that matter).

how bad is it for the TDI engine if you drive short distances?

Not for the new CR engines (OP has a 2010 Golf), their emission systems, particularly the DPF, need to get up to and maintain certain operating temps in order to function correctly; active and passive regens occur most effectively at sustained highway speeds.

    Window Tinting Help

Wrong, that is not "all" it does. I tint my cars primarily to cut UV, all tint, regardless of how dark it is, blocks 99% of UV. UV is what destroys your interior. Second priority is heat reduction, third is for anti-theft, I live in a downtown area with only on-street parking, tinted...

Still undecided about getting a tune(malone)

You already have a tune that optimizes MPG over HP, it's called your right foot. There is no magic tune for this, in a fuel throttled engine (diesels) it's simply a matter putting less fuel into the combustion chamber and your right foot controls this. Tunes are used to allow more fueling...

6 spd manual transmission fluid change?

It is 120K for our cars, on the newer cars it's 130K. I wondered it about also so I looked it up. I wonder if a replacement TB kit for our cars is 130K. Like you, I'll probably stay with what the manual calls for regardless.

    '09 Jetta catalytic converter

No, not necessarily, if they're using the proper diagnostic tools for VW's they should be listed as EGT sensors. There are four EGT sensors, a O2 sensor is a different thing. I suspect they don't have the right diagnostic reader for the VW CAN-Bus, they're probably using a generic OBD-II...

    '09 Jetta catalytic converter

Looks like a bad EGT sensor to me, there are four of them placed strategically before/after the turbo and the various emission components and the ECU uses data from them to maintain optimal emission temps/performance. So a faulty EGT sensor can cause the catalytic converter as well as the...

    Trouble getting into 1st gear

Check the adjustment on the shifter cables first, it can cause the symptoms you describe, it's easy to check/adjust and you will have eliminated one variable... Search the forums here, there's a number of HOW-TO's, also on this site. There's also plenty of good youtube videos, search around...
