Throw in the towel? [Transmission issues]

I wouldn't doubt that it's low on gear oil, it leaks like a sieve. I top it off from time to time to try and keep it happy. The output bearings are utterly trashed and I have not had the sort of finances around to pull it and split the case. At this point, if I can make it last for a few more...

Throw in the towel? [Transmission issues]

So I've just about had it, convinced this car is cursed. I've been having some issues shifting into 3rd gear lately. Like, major ones. It would just grind when I tried. So I've been doing 1-2-4-5 lately. Then, the other day, 4th went out on me. I went and checked the shift bushings and sure...

    Smoke cloud, running rough

Pull the intercooler-intake manifold hose/pipe and check for excessive oil, may have a blown turbo. If there seems to be excessive oil inside the pipe try draining the intercooler and see just how much oil is inside it.

    My Blacked-Out Beetle

Using an unmodified HVLP sprayer for now -- which seems to work the best so far. The 'stuff' is heavily thinned, so it takes many coats to get complete coverage. 8 coats gives you nearly full coverage but is still very thin, I like to put 12-14 coats down on a surface to make it a little more...

want to change DRL's from headlight to 3W LED DRL

Relay 173 under the driver-side kick panel if I recall correctly. Search/Google "DTRL relay 173" for more info.

want to change DRL's from headlight to 3W LED DRL

Another school of thought is to place a relay triggered by the alternator - this is what I did in my old BMW for a DRL retrofit. For this you could just pull your DRL relay and rely on this. Breakdown: Splice a lead into the field coil circuit between the indicator light and alternator and...

    My Blacked-Out Beetle

This is a bit of a chemistry project of mine right now. Without going into to much detail (it's actually a product I'm developing for automotive application) it's a copolymer thermoplastic dissolved in a solvent mixture which will not damage existing automotive paint - with added ingredients to...

    My Blacked-Out Beetle

It's a coating I'm working on which is similar to plasti but has higher UV and scratch resistance and hopefully doesn't "dry out" as much over time. The idea is the same, though. Peelable synthetic rubber coating. I'm stripping the whole car down and going for a flat gunmetal or charcoal grey...

    My Blacked-Out Beetle

The headlights were opened and the reflectors were blacked out. I also got some aftermarket tail lights that are mostly black inside. Not quite happy with either of them, so that is why I don't have any pictures of them yet. Still working on it.

    Bang!

Entirely possible, but my 3 failures happened at boost pressures within spec and when taking off from an idle (gently.) And my mounts were ragged out. It's somewhat uncommon to see the compressor head divorce itself from the center housing, even though these failures have been showing up a lot...

    Bang!

Just a theory: check/change your engine mounts ASAP. I experienced this failure on my engine 3 times in a row (3 turbos, in about 2 months time.) The only thing I could figure is that my mounts were so sloppy that the engine jerking back and fourth "tugged" the head right off the turbocharger...

Beetle 6-speed...the Auto blues are over!

This is great! More info, please! I'm considering this on my Beetle..

    No power to the wheels!

The rubber dust boot on the slave cylinder shaft is ripped - that alone would cause any competent mechanic to replace it. The possibility that all this trouble may have been caused by a part that - upon visual inspection - should be replaced, is alarming. If your mechanic will warranty his work...

    No power to the wheels!

Yeah, something is wrong. Bent fork, bad slave cylinder, bad hydraulic line or bad return valve on master cylinder. This... makes no sense at all. With the salve cylinder backed out or removed the clutch disk should be clamped firmly and you should have a full positive engagement between...

    temp warning light

If it is the same as the Beetle, flashing red is low coolant. As I recall an open circuit will cause this light to flash. You can pull the coolant level sensor plug on the reservoir and jump the pins with a wire/paperclip/etc. If the light goes out - bad sensor or connection corrosion. If the...

    should I hear my turbo??

I did a cat/mufflerectomy on my Beetle. It's loud, but still quieter than say - a stock Cummins 12/24v(pre-commonrail) truck, a pickup with flowmaster mufflers, a "riced" out Honda, etc. It's a very nice tone and volume level if you like hearing your engine. In my experience, keeping the stock...

    No power to the wheels!

I need clarification on something, when you said "but coincidentally the car would not roll after he got it running" do you mean that the wheels were locked in their position or that it would not move under its own power? And so on to the current situation, I have a few ideas. Place the front...

2003 Jetta TDI... will run with assistance, otherwise no start.

With your current setup, put the vac on the discharge from the IP, and pull fuel from the cup through the IP and out through the discharge hose. Make sure you're not getting any bubbles on the discharge line. Then put the discharge back into the cup and give it a shot. If bubbles start coming...

Rear Springs won't fall out / install easily

This can be dangerous, but I've done it in a pinch on other vehicles. Do this at your own risk! You can compress the spring outside the car, and wrap the coils with with some kind of banding to hold them preloaded. Then remove the compressors, put the spring in place -- very carefully -- and...
