Consider a GL Bluetec. I love mine, bought a used one 2 years ago and had no problems with it. Big, but not Suburban big, but bigger than the Touareg.

Did you buy one of those cheap knockoff MAF's from Ebay? Every time I had a problem with my Jetta, it turned out to be the MAF. I was convinced I had water in my fuel once, because it was smoking white and black smoke and running terribly. Swapped the MAF and it cured itself.
