Fixed! The Anti-shudder valve wasn't closing on shut-off. So FREAKING happy to get away with a 30min repair. Had one on hand to use. Beautiful to see the mechanism working in one and not the other. So hard with TDIs to diagnose rattles sometimes...

There's an opinion by Franko6 that no special tool is needed to install the RMS. Just a steady hand and taking your time.
But I'm glad to have read the advice above. My BKD RMS (170kkm) is not leaking and even though I have a new one ready just in case, I'm going to leave it.

The mechanic has got in a locksmith (no good) and has now taken out the injectors to be inspected by a speciality place. He reckons they're getting signal.
I wonder if it's not an earth problem?
Or high DSG fluid preventing the engine starting?

After figuring out how to read it, the crank and cam sensors seem to be working. The cam was half the crank rpm, as it's meant to be.
Didn't get a screenshot because OBDEleven takes too long to select the graphs (while ignition is on) and the car won't start.
I grabbed this data just now because I won't be able to touch the car for a week. Hope someone can get something from it? (MAF disconnected)

Timing is fine, double checked the cam and crank alignment.
Noticed the inlet valve advance seemed to be jumping around a fair bit. At one point got up to 22 degrees 😳 before it came back to 0.00 (supposed to be between -6 and +6).
Car fired with some starting spray into the intake. But it sounded weird, like pistons were clashing, but that might be spray's ignition characteristics. EDIT: Yes ether is more energetic than diesel (and can damage the engine) 😳 the can says it's safe, but maybe only on agricultural diesels...
Lift pump is definitely working, and the injectors seem to be receiving fuel. Although no smell of diesel in exhaust (which seems weird). But I guess unburnt diesel isn't that strong smelling.

A second roadside assistance guy couldn't help. We tried putting diesel in the air inlet pipe just in case it temporarily fired.
According to injector volume data it has fuel being injected (I don't think Mk5's measure individual fuel flow, which the other guy got wrong).
But there's no diesel...
