I wonder if that later model you drove was '96 or later with OBDII? I've heard that the switch to OBDII killed some of the performance and fuel economy.
I've cruised at 90mph happily on a flat stretch of highway, top down, wearing ear plugs. The temperature guage did climb near to the red...
Funny thing, the original blue is slightly darker but the previous owner repainted it in this lighter colour which is supposed to be closer to a Suzuki Swift "Competition Blue" of the late 80's early 90's.
Actually it was an Alberta car for most of its life wearing Chevy Sprint SL badges (and...
Dang it, was in the middle of typing a huge update when I hit the wrong button.
Wanted to share that I framed my favorite photo of the TDI:
And that, in the Spring of 2022, I got a new project car:
I have restored and re-badged and registered it as a 1991 Geo Metro Convertible.
It came...
That is awesome! I would love to take a long weekend drive in the new Micra, there is minor issue that all US border land-crossings are still closed to leisure seeking Canadians until at least November 8th: https://globalnews.ca/news/8268245/canada-u-s-land-open-nov-8-official/
I knew I was taking a chance driving half way around Lake Huron and Lake Michigan just to go check out your GTG, but it was a worth it. Thanks for hosting that cruise through the woods was one of the most memorable drives I have ever been on. Thanks for letting me drive your Jetta (the blue...
Will miss you guys on this forum, will try to continue to check in.
I just stared a blog with pictures over on the Micra forum:

I also have a running blog on the Odyssey forum...
Lets see if I can answer your questions:
It weighs very little, a few pounds.
I noticed no temperature difference in the summer but I have a silver car and have no air conditioning so I always drive with windows open.
I noticed no difference in sound, no echo chamber, not a big deal really...
Yes, you did, I am finally done with the car. It was difficult yet not difficult letting go. Our family is moving on as our oldest child is learning to drive the timing was perfect to get a newer more reliable car with an automatic transmission that I can drive daily.
We bought a 2015 Nissan...
Sorry, I have no idea, but thanks for bringing this thread to the top it has been an extremely handy thread for us with ALH engines.
Thought I would add the Vacuum scheme I have been running for a few years now, details here: http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=479608
It doesn't hurt to change your gear oil, but I have always just used the cheapest full sythentic 75w90 from my local big box store without issue. I've only changed it twice, and neither time did it "fix" any hard shifting issues. What did fix my hard shifting issues was replacing the worn...
679,600 km Update:
Continues to start up first try every time now that I added a relay between the battery and the starter. So that is finally fixed after 6-8 years.
In an unrelated story, I had a sneaking suspicion that the clutch was not disengaging properly, even with my foot to the floor...
One Week Later: The relay works great! Haven't had a single hesitation to start in a whole week (it used to be daily). I haven't used the big red button since it was installed, just using the push button ignition on the shifter which has new found power from the extra relay which drives...
Yes! The mythical r32 squared! More here: https://www.instagram.com/carfrontswaps/?hl=en
Yes, my father used to do that with his wine barrels. I plan on cutting the ends off so I'm thinking I better just use wood screws thru the bands to keep everything in place longer and through various...
I was surfing the "free" listings on Kijijiji (Canada's corporate version of Craigslist) when I saw this:
They were way bigger than I expected:
Made it home safe:
Yes, I towed 1340 litres worth of Cognac barrels on the busiest highway in the world, safely, with no turbo...
...while...
EVEN LONGER TERM UPDATE
Five Years Later: Version 3.0 Still works! Never got rid of that intermittent "no-crank" though.
I had been living with the intermittent "clicky-no-starty" condition for for 9 years now. Its the running joke of the car. Starts on the "first try, every time", I...
Can you elaborate on how set up a specific AFR? I just turned them up until I saw smoke and then turned them back. I guess there is some math, okay I could probably figure it out, but then I guess different injectors and other setttings are going to make it hard to "measure" the fuel part?
No worries. Hey, thanks for the tip on the foam liner from amazon, I ended up finding the spray adhesive that was I was going to buy from my local hardware store for 66% percent off: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B007Z7PF2Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_image_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
