I've had my TDI-PD for almost exactly 10 years and 180k miles. The big problems I've had were a turbo failure at 47k (just within the powertrain warranty!) and the N75 valve failed around 100k. I've always done preventative maintenance on time or before the recommended time. My mechanic...
About a month ago I had to fill up before work (about 6:45am). I pulled in next to the pump and got out of the car before I realized I had pulled up on the wrong side DOH! I turned around and started filling up. A guy filling up his diesel truck on another pump said "Just bought the...
My 05 BEW has had its issues but pretty much trouble free for the last 50k miles.
--Turbo failed at 47k, replaced under warranty
--N75 valve failed around 100k
--driver window regulator replaced at 150k
--driver heated seat quit around 100k
--alternator replaced 120k
--scheduled maintenance...
I have 1 car so the TDI gets a good highway workout at least 5 days a week. She's in a garage every night but outside during the day. Last week it did not get above 25, most days the high was around 10, low below zero. It never needed more than 1 cycle for the glow plugs, 4 year old OEM...
A couple weeks ago I was filling up at King Soopers. A Ford diesel truck pulled up on the other side of the pump, looked new and well cared for. The older gentleman saw I was filling up with the green handle and said "VW puts the diesel in that little car?" Of course I was more than happy to...
If you can find one with most or all maintenance records I would go for it. Make sure it's had the right oil. VWs can be quirky (window regulators failing, Beetle headlight bulbs are a PAIN to replace, no idea about Jettas) but the engine is strong and if you give it the right oil and think...
I decided to leave mine off after I kept cleaning it every time I got some oil on it. I like the purr of the TDI so any more noise is music to my ears. When I took a few interior plastic pieces to a body shop for painting I included the engine cover. Now it's shiny blue lagoon and only goes...
My TDI has had to sit outside in colder temps and for longer periods of time but I decided to time it yesterday to see how long it took to warm up....12 hours outside at 0 degrees at 5000 ft, started right away, 6 minutes for the blue coolant light to turn off and 12 minutes of driving for the...
Sooner is better than later, especially in the winter. All it takes is one rock or piece of ice to make a small hole in your oil pan and you could be stranded. My Beetle has the DG skid plate and I love it. It's peace of mind to be able to drive over a chunk of ice and smile as I hear it...
I try to do that but it's not always possible as in this situation. It's good to think ahead what to do before confronted with it, especially since the OP has never driven in wintery conditions.
Driving in snow/ice the past few days has reminded me of a few more tips...
- On/off ramps, bridges and overpasses tend to be more slick. Downshift BEFORE you start to turn on the ramps since your car is also more vulnerable to sliding when you're turning.
- If you start to brake for a...
My commute was 20 minutes longer this morning but I-25 was dry this evening. Drivers were actually driving smart around FC and Longmont. The Beetle didn't have any problems.
If people drive like idiots it will take more than a reminder on a forum to get them to be nice on the road, but it is a good reminder that looking ahead to what's down the road is extremely helpful in wintery conditions.
I drive on paved city roads and highways and Northern Colorado usually has fewer than 5 days a year when my commute is scary. Therefore, I buy all-season tires that are great on ice. Right now I'm using Yokohama Evignor and they did great on very icy roads tonight.
Keep in your car - jumper...
