On my 2003 Golf TDI, my scangauge2 shows 0.01 GPH while coasting in gear. While idle is 0.08gph (a/c off) 0.13gph (a/c on) For sure coasting in gear, downshifting, etc always saves you fuel. (on a diesel that is)
Buy a scanguage2 and learn what your car does best. Seeing real time GPH (gallons per hour) and Instant MPG and of course AVG MPG all on the same screen will show you what your doing.
I've found in "normal" driving mode upon taking off from a light, keeping it under 1 GPH (1st gear - 3 gear)...
