CVCA Oil Change Tips, with photos

As many years as I've lived in SF, I still appreciate the moderate marine climate. Working on my cars outdoors in the cold sucked eggs, and I don't miss it. If I want winter or summer weather, they're both within easy driving distance.

CVCA Oil Change Tips, with photos

Thanks for the write-up, gang. I just changed the oil and filter on my new-to-me CVCA Passat for the first time today, and these instructions made it super-easy to accomplish. After years of only needing 3.8L of oil for my 2005 BHW, the CVCA's 5.5L capacity seemed like a lot of oil.

    Valve Cover Gasket

Well, you were right on the money, @oilhammer. After I removed the upper EGR cooler pipe, I was able to slide out the old valve cover in just a couple of minutes, with almost no wrangling. A clean-up of the surface, an application of the D-174-003-M2 sealant, and the new valve cover's in place...

    Valve Cover Gasket

My local VW "stealer" has set aside the two proper metal gaskets for the upper EGR cooler pipe for me. I'll pick 'em up in a couple of days, and take another swing at this when my workweek is done. Honestly, thanks for all your friendly help guys, especially @oilhammer. I really appreciate your...

    Valve Cover Gasket

So, remove the upper EGR pipe, rotate the cam sprocket until I can wiggle it out. I'm going to assume I need to renew the EGR cooler pipe gaskets, yes? There are lots of things over my head, including figure skating, but on this car, I've successfully done the timing belt job, replaced the EGR...

    Valve Cover Gasket

So, like this? 1. Remove the upper EGR cooler pipe. 2. Remove and replace the valve cover. 3. Replace the upper EGR cooler pipe with new metal gaskets. Sorry for being dense, but how is there enough room to get it past the part of the intake where the upper EGR cooler pipe connects to it?

    Valve Cover Gasket

Following up on this gang. It seems that I can't maneuver the old cover out of place on the 2005 BHW 5.5 Passat unless I remove the intake manifold. After reading this article, and turning the cam by hand to move the tabs on the reluctor wheel so that the front of the cover can be maneuvered is...

    2005.5 Jetta TDI Coolant Leak

That did the trick @oilhammer. Thanks for the tip. Now my kid can continue driving the car while I decide if I want to invest the time and money in tearing apart the dash and console to replace the heater core.

    2005.5 Jetta TDI Coolant Leak

Imagine that: I'm not the only person who's ever needed to do this. Thanks for the tip @oilhammer. https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/dorman-oe-solutions/dorman-oe-solutions-26-degree-heater-core-bypass/doe0/626001

    2005.5 Jetta TDI Coolant Leak

Thanks, @oilhammer. I've already told my family that if I do this as a time-buying fix, that the only heat will be the sun, and the seat warmers. Do you happen to know what the inside diameter of those hoses is?

    2005.5 Jetta TDI Coolant Leak

Hey gang, semi-related to this, my kid drove our 2005 B5.5 Passat round trip to Truckee, CA last week, and when she got home, I noticed that the coolant was low, there's a drip under the passenger front door, and the carpet on that side of the car is also damp. I'm guessing that the heater core...

2015 Passat Timing belt change CVCA

Replacing the timing belt on the 2015 CVCA Passat definitely seems more complicated and fiddly than on my old 2005 PD version. I'll plan to do the timing belt, water pump, serpentine belt, etc. as soon as I can make space in the garage, and dedicate an entire weekend to it. As for other stuff...

2015 Passat Timing belt change CVCA

Revising this thread, gang. Two Saturdays back, I took possession of a 2015 CVCA Passat with only 35k miles on it. It's in fine shape. My question is this: Should I go with the maintenance schedule for planning the timing belt replacement, which could mean many more years before getting close...

How To: R/R B5.5 BHW Alternator Pulley

Hey gang, I need to replace the serpentine belt on my '05 BHW 5.5 PD Passat, and I'm wondering if I can work it out of the engine by disconnecting the fan as shown in step number 9 in the instructions above. I'd love to avoid the full-on lock carrier stuff if possible for this job, especially...

    Love Affair On Rocks

Reviving a really old thread: I just replaced that same super-expensive hose on my 2005 BHW 5.5 Passat. The hole was about in the same location, and the failure was sudden. The folks at IDParts.com had one OEM part 3B0145828K in stock, which even after overnight Saturday delivery still cost less...

    Valve Cover Gasket

This is why I ordered the OEM valve cover, despite the added cost, for my BHW 5.5. Unfortunately, the new valve cover arrived too late for me to install it before driving 1,140 miles round trip to San Diego last week. The car ran well, FWIW, although the mileage wasn't as good as it has been in...

    Valve Cover Gasket

Thanks, guys. As they say, "a little dab will do ya." I broke down and bought a tube of the VW D-174-003-M2 sealant, just to be thorough.

2015 Passat Timing belt change CVCA

Thanks for sharing your insights. I let that Passat go, but am now circling around a 2015 Golf with 50k original miles. Because of the age, I'm tempted to do the timing belt on it anyway, if the owner and I can agree on a price. Sellers in the SF Bay Area seem to think their 9-year-old VW...

    Valve Cover Gasket

Got it. The replacement valve cover has been ordered from IDParts. Now for a really dumb question: Does the sealant go between the valve cover and the rubber gasket, or between the gasket and the head? The last time I replaced a valve cover, it was on a '64 Bonneville, so my experience in this...
