Anyone tried the 6l80e with a TDI yet

IMHO automatics and turbodiesel engines can be a great combo. Especially in a heavier rig. As long as the trans is up to the task and the ratios are right it can do a good job keeping the motor in the power band. I run a medium duty fleet for work and most of our trucks are automatics...

Anyone tried the 6l80e with a TDI yet

Anything is an improvement vs the Rover aluminum V8 as you know. Between head gaskets and gasoline it goes through all the wrong stuff at too fast a rate. Couple videos of one of the 2.4L TD six swapped Discos I know of, to prove the concept of the VAG 5/6cyl engine pattern mating to the LR ZF...

Anyone tried the 6l80e with a TDI yet

What I have always thought would be a slick setup in a Disco: Find a ZF 4HP22 trans out of a 1984-1986 Volvo 740 or 760 turbodiesel that can donate its bellhousing, TC, and possibly valve body if you want that too. (not too hard to acquire, I have a dozen of them sitting on the shop floor here...

Those old IH trucks were tough but I never liked how old fashioned the cabs were. Not a good place to spend a long day on the road. Lots of exposed painted metal, bad driving position, no tilt wheel, small windows, poor visibility and ventilation, hot, terrible ride, loud as hell. They were...

Aha yeah they only had them in the E350 vans, eh. I forgot. Plenty of 3/4T F-series with the PSD so I get confused... Sorry for hijacking your thread. :p

Yeah I liked the older pre-emission Hinos with the Toyota J08E motor. We had a couple in a previous fleet I worked for. Clean running, easy starting, never seemed to have much go wrong with them. I don't know that there's all that much to recommend the Hino truck now that it has a Cummins...

There are certainly still thousands of the OBS and old style E-vans on the road so I cannot imagine they will become parts orphans anytime soon. The OBS seem to have become popular for restorations these days too so the market for their parts might only grow. So maybe there's hope for good...

Interesting. Yeah I guess I have mostly just been lucky with mine and have only needed easily found parts. Everything I have ever needed has been readily available from aftermarket and seemingly good quality. I'm not trying to suggest I think Ford is the best in the industry for this by any...

Nice. Yeah getting something running in stock-ish form certainly helps for resolving issues. That is my plan as well. I'm going with the 2.5L V6 in my allroad as you might remember. Haven't started on that project yet, trying to drive the V6 Passat a little to get a feel for the drivetrain...

Right on, looks clean! I went a similar trajectory. B5/C5 platform is in a different universe from the old B4 in terms of assembly quality, refinement, etc. Doesn't have the simplicity of course and won't get the same mileage with the added weight/tire/driveline losses, but it's worth it...

Hah, truth is I guess I have no idea! I am a Ford fan third (VAG and old Volvos tied for first), have had a couple dozen Fords over the years, but all of mine have been common type rigs.... F series with the old Windsor or 300ci six, or 5.4/6.8L or 6.2L gassers (my current SuperDuty and my...

Makes sense, I think I have only ever seen one in person. One assumes Ford will do a somewhat better job supporting that engine over the long term given that it's an in-house motor from a company that has not changed ownership since it was produced. Maybe not quite as much of an orphan but...

Yeah. It seems like the diesels in particular are doomed to become orphan vehicles in terms of parts/service support over the long term. An engine and trans that are not used in any other vehicle sold in the US and only in very small numbers in the ProMaster..... No parts or service...

WTB: Looking for manual trans 5 SPD for 2005 mk4. Located in Calgary

FWIW, I don't think you'd have cruise in any gear. Not that the other gears matter very much, as 5th is what one would really care about for highway running. But the EUH's ratios are different from the ALH spec EGR/EBJ in most if not all gears, plus the ring and pinion ratio is different too...

    b5 a4 alh swap transmission

Nice, yeah if you don't manage to get your hands on one or find some other path with a USDM available 6spd that works out, get hold of me. I am not exactly looking to let go of this gearbox I have, but it's been in my garage a few years and I'm trying to resist the urge to hoard parts that I...

    b5 a4 alh swap transmission

Great swap plan and a good pairing of engine and car. ALH is a perfect idea for a B5 A4. Some would say a PD engine like a BHW would be a more natural fit since those are already configured for longitudinal install and so you get solutions out of the box for things like cooling, ac, exhaust...

A buddy of mine has had a couple and still has one. He really likes driving it (and I liked it the one time I rode in it). Good power and mileage, reasonably quiet and smooth. It's a work van for him and puts on lots of high speed highway miles on the passes up here in the Rockies. Sounds...

2005 Passat Wagon - 5 sp swap - SLC Utah

YMMV. :p I like the gold/beige combo..... Gold metallic is good for looking reasonably clean even when it's not, and lighter interior color stays cool easier in hot weather. My B5.5V parts car has this interior and I think the coffee colored dash and upper door panels combined with the beige...

    2005 B5 wagon, 2010 A5 sedan FS

GLWS, good deals on both especially the B5V IMO. Turbo on a BHW isn't a bad job. The fresh brakes and tires alone get you to over a grand.
