Beetle and Beetle Convert. Roll Call. Who's out there?

I don't know the time spec for the EA189 but 10 years definitely sounds reasonable for a 130k item. Our 2015 EA288's tensioner had a 'chirp' at 32k when we bought it in 2020, then the warranty dealer replacement wasn't done right(they did stuff like re-use the original belt, etc.) so VW wound up...

Beetle and Beetle Convert. Roll Call. Who's out there?

Welcome! Our 2015 ‘vert has been free from issues since the timing belt fiasco. Just changed the oil and noticed slight seepage from the oil pan gasket. Haven’t had any new dealers open up and the state of how VW allows their dealerships to operate mean I won’t be buying a newer VW for the...

Beetle and Beetle Convert. Roll Call. Who's out there?

Our '15 vert is at 57k miles now. No issues since the timing belt tensioner issue and resultant top end replacement nearly 20k ago. Black top gets sticky residue, can't seem to wash it off so it's kinda striped/faded. It's outside 24/7.

    New California smog checks.......

I'm not seeing any other links/reports of this, but I certainly believe it. I haven't messed with our '15 TDI yet, wondering if they'll pick up the difference on our '03, and if this holds it's one more reason to finally swap an AFN into my '94 Audi Cabriolet that's just sitting at the moment...

Passenger rear view mirror glass fell off today

Thanks for posting. I had this happen for the first time on our '03 Beetle this winter. Luckily it was vibrating a bit first and then came off in my wife's hands without breaking. It's been parked so I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. We have the aspherical mirrors Aaron imported several...

Baumeisters' Black '15 Beetle Convertible TDI

Ticaf, thanks, I certainly agree. I'll be watching closely, I'm sure it will be back to the dealer at least once before this warranty's up. When I wrote to the original dealer Service Manager(and VW corporate separately) I included the 'no mention/offer' of replacing the water pump, which I...

Baumeisters' Black '15 Beetle Convertible TDI

The long story is that an engine 'chirp' when cold at 34k progressed to being constant at 39k miles. Since it's a CPO vehicle purchased last May I just took it to the semi-local dealer in November without investigating too much myself.(I bought it from a dealer a few hours away) They diagnosed...

    Auto-to-5 speed Swap, CA

Hey Torman, I don't know who's available, seems we have mostly NorCal DIYers(like myself) watching this thread and not any mechanics. The swap isn't too tough. The gasser folks do it a lot too so there's that stable of mechanics to investigate.

Baumeisters' Black '15 Beetle Convertible TDI

Got the Beetle back from the dealer on the 19th, but dropped it off at the dealer we purchased it from(2.5 hours away) on 12/30 due to a flashing glow plug light while we were in that area. They called in the VW regional Quality Technical Manager to look at it, long story short we're waiting for...

    CVCA timing belts? (chirp, chirp?)

Thanks for details, I haven't delved into this engine more than an oil change yet. Sounds like something I definitely should check at next change(or beforehand). It's only at 39k miles. My wife just had a job change last month with a shorter commute(in town now!) so I'm estimating only 9k/year.

    CVCA timing belts? (chirp, chirp?)

FINALLY got the car back last Saturday. From the notes they isolated it to the idler pulley making noise. They replaced timing belt, tensioner, rollers and bolts/nuts but not the water pump or serpentine belt. Silly me, thinking that would be part of a dealer timing belt job. Guess not under CPO...

    EA288 engine chirping?

FINALLY got the car back last Saturday. From the notes they isolated it to the idler pulley making noise. They replaced timing belt, tensioner, rollers and bolts/nuts but not the water pump or serpentine belt. Silly me, thinking that would be part of a dealer timing belt job. Guess not under...

    CVCA timing belts? (chirp, chirp?)

Thanks Pedro...that would make sense to me. When we got it in June(@32k) the chirp was only on cold start and diminished after running 10-20 minutes. Now at 39k its constant, so a worsening leak on a buyback car put back into service makes sense, right?

Will anybody sell me the right battery?

My 2 cents, from a long history of using 'uprated' parts in my cars that were OE in other models: Figure out the battery YOU want, find the application for it. Find that car online, via eBay, whatever and record a few of the VINs. Use THAT with the parts counters, etc. and you'll be fine. If...

    EA288 engine chirping?

Very much agreed, in retrospect I should have performed that task myself before letting the dealer at it. Too late now. Wondering what kind of mess I've gotten myself into, I've never had a single-trip dealer repair with VW or Chevrolet. I've always had to bring it back for something they...

    Skipping, crazy

Pony up and buy Ross-Tech's VCDS, run a report and post it here, like OilHammer suggested. It's money well spent, and you can always re-sell it. It'll tell you a lot more that forum members really need to know to steer you in the right direction. I had my Hex-Com since 2005, Ross-Tech just let...

    EA288 engine chirping?

Anyone dealt with a 'chirping' engine sound on their EA288? Our new to us '15 NBC, 39k miles, has been at the dealer for 3 weeks now. They initially diagnosed the alternator pulley. Well that only comes with the whole alternator now, so it was a slow truck from NJ to California to get it. I...

    CVCA timing belts? (chirp, chirp?)

Hello all, Anyone have a CVCA with a 'chirping' timing belt? Have had our '15 TDI at the dealers for 3 weeks now. Mostly because they initially diagnosed the 'chirp' as a bad alternator pulley, and it took nearly 3 weeks for them to get another one. Surprise, surprise, found out today that...

Baumeisters' Black '15 Beetle Convertible TDI

Took it in to the Dealer for CPO warranty items nearly 3 weeks ago and they still have it. Waiting on an alternator to make its slow trek across the country. So I had them do the 40k service while it's there, but now I'm regretting not having a family-owned local independent do it. I have much...

Guru maybe come to my place. Anyone need work done ?

Gordie, Welcome to the best car forum I've seen in 20 years. (the 1990s BMW email list was damn good). I'm not too far from you in Auburn, CA. Unfortunately only have a small carport right now and no other flat space around until we get around to some major landscape changes, retaining walls...
