I recently had problems with my timing and CEL. In the process of tracking the problem down I had my 98 Jetta running with the injection pump off by one tooth advanced and off by one tooth retarded. It seemed to run fine. Due to the CEL, caused by a faulty start of injection signal, it was in...

The fastest and cheapest way would be to get a pickup and a tow dolly and go get him.
If you take your manifold and turbo his engine may not run due to the hydrolock. I would just tow it.

A good manifold pressure gauge will have the dampening valve built in. It is usually inside the connection fitting. A small slotted adjustment screw.
