front wheel drive line fell out!

I'm not a fan of some of these cv axles they sell now, seems that they don't last very long and there's really no explanation as to why. I'd prefer to clean and repack an OE CV joint vs use a new one that has joints from unknown sources, even if I have to swap them from one side to the other...

front wheel drive line fell out!

You could be right, the graphic for the Vanagon doesn't show any for the inboard joints, yet in the count of what's needed it does say quantity 24, which would cover both sides, inner and outer. However....as I said before, there's nothing in the parts catalog that suggests VW ever said use to...

front wheel drive line fell out!

It's sort of a washer, it spreads the force of the bolt over a portion of the surface of the boot flange, and as volksguy said, if you don't use it the flange can distort at the point where the bolt engages the flange. The inboard CV joint on the Vanagon did not utilize the washer you...

front wheel drive line fell out!

No where in the VW parts catalog for the B3/4 / Mk3 is this washer identified for a CV joint install. VW never prescribed use of a washer for our cars, OTOH if you leave off the spacer (#10) you'll have problems. Steve

    Glow Plug difference

That happens frequently in the MB CDI cars...websites list an 11.5v plug often and that's not the correct gp, it's supposed to be 5v. In the end you have to do your own research because a lot of parts houses are just aggregators for junk, they don't really know anything, and when confronted...

    Glow Plug difference

The NGK run just almost $31 on RA, the Bosch run $21, but remember there's shipping involved there and with some other places that's included. There's also a Vemo GP, which is a cheaper still. It depends on whether you're replacing just one or all of them too. If I was replacing the single...

    BRM swap

I think it's worth it if you have the time and have the ability to do it. It won't be cost effective to employ a shop to do it and I would imagine most places wouldn't want to do the work because most shops won't be familiar with these cars at all. Steve

Toyota’s Hino Motors Confesses to Diesel Emissions Cheating

The problem with that idea is that you get a 'all your eggs in one basket' mentality and that results in a huge vulnerability. Would be better to take the environazis out of the emissions biz at the government level IMO. Steve

Outer CV joint 5sp to 6sp...?

Swapping sides does help with longevity, I've done it before. I wouldn't buy completely new axles, there's no need to when you can replace joints. You retain your factory axle shaft (sans joints) which is critical IMO. I don't believe that @boertje was suggesting that the shaft had worn splines...

Anyone have luck with the URO brand valve cover available through ID Parts ?

I wouldn't use RTV with a new Üro valve cover with new gasket, it shouldn't be necessary. I don't understand why they've left all the ALH owners without a replacement gasket for this? Seems very bizarre. Factory is close to $350, which isn't going to sell very many, I'd still give the Üro a...

Outer CV joint 5sp to 6sp...?

It depends on the kind of play, are you talking about the outer CV being floppy or there being a noticeable lack of connection when you hold the CV parallel and try twisting it? If there's movement in the CV joint (held rigid and parallel) and no movement at the axle at the same time then the...

Outer CV joint 5sp to 6sp...?

That GKN number crosses (directly and indirectly) to 1J0498099E, EV and EX (for starters) and 1J0407311R too, all of which are quite common and easily found. Vaico V107284 is an analogue to those also... Steve

Anyone have luck with the URO brand valve cover available through ID Parts ?

It's not like Üro made the valve cover anyway, they just rebrand parts made elsewhere, so it's worth a shot IMO. Steve

front wheel drive line fell out!

I've never had one inner joint come apart from loose bolts, then again I tighten them probably more than the factory specification too because of this problem. And I know sometimes my boot kits have come without gaskets...so they went back together without gaskets. Never bothered with...

Outer CV joint 5sp to 6sp...?

You could be right, I was only looking at NA catalog, but if the hub mating surface was the same why use a different part? I never anticipated that you had EU axle shafts, but I doubt there's any actual difference but I will say that the axle part number you supplied shows up for use on...
