After many months, I was able to smog and register my ute. Long story short, the smog places do vary. One of the places cared I had an aftermarket cat, one didn't. Had to put back the EGR, but that was easy.

Strangely enough, they DO need to confirm with the door sticker because it lists the crash standard yadayadayada. IBW got me a good example and the service is punching one out for me in the next couple days. Woohoo!

Yeah, these companies are effectively design services who can replicate stickers. I was hoping for a 2001 RS to get as close as possible, but I think even another '01 Golf would do the trick. And yes, this appears to be completely legal provided that one is not using a false VIN.

Haha, I am actually fond of Indiana, but I usually encounter it after driving through Ohio and by then white line fever begins setting in on the plains. I think 8 days will be fine for taking the northern route. Just need to find civilization to rest in along the way.
