Glow plugs spins but won’t come out

You can rent the tool (there's a person on ebay, Florida I believe, who rents them). Costly, yes, but if you botch things it'll be a LOT more costly: see my thread below. Do NOT rush this. Soak, soak and soak some more. How did this GP get broken? They don't break on their own. Someone...

2003 Jetta TDI ALH Starter Bust

I wish I could find a picture of what happened to one of my starters. I'd rebuilt it, as I've done for many, various starters, and it went sour. Stuff happens. Opened the starter up and it and the brushes looked like they'd been run through a blender: suspect the plate got cocked. Saving...

Looking for input on how to deal with broken GP on an OM648

Steve, if the guy* who is interested in this engine doesn't get it I might look to pick up a head and make this thing whole again. Right now, however, I've got a huge project to swap engines+trans (as well as lots of restoration work- underbody and suspension stuff). * I send him email with a...

Looking for input on how to deal with broken GP on an OM648

Yup! Have a kit on order (due Friday, I think). The original engine was horribly inflicted with Black Death: and the dealer said it was in "Excellent "condition;" I told him that the car was neglected (he was supposedly the only one working on it- I am pretty sure he cleaned up the BD; only...

Looking for input on how to deal with broken GP on an OM648

BTW - In case no one has seen one of these engines (this is my replacement engine- still need to do more cleaning and prep work, not to mention pulling the engine+trans out of my keeper car!):

Looking for input on how to deal with broken GP on an OM648

Oh yeah, Steve, thanks for the reminder about Peach Parts. I'd run across a lot of stuff from there when doing Internet searches. I'm subscribed to far too many forums but decided to subscribe to that one (still awaiting moderator approval). I've been really spoiled by TDI Club forums, the...

Looking for input on how to deal with broken GP on an OM648

Was in contact with Frank and he says that the head is toast, that the ONLY options are: 1) Replace head; or 2) Drill and tap with oversize and stuff a bolt/cap in the new threads (and make peace with living with the Check Engine light staying on). Because I don't like hack jobs, so, as noted I...

Looking for input on how to deal with broken GP on an OM648

Recently picked up an 2005 MB E320 CDI. Shady dealer said he'd replaced all six glow plugs. Still had a Check Engine light on for a bad #2 GP circuit. When I finally got around to checking things out I discovered this (GP was just sitting in the hole): Here's what the hole looks like...

TDIClub Secret Society of Benz Owners (SSBO)

OK... Count me in! Wanted a traveling/road car for my retirement years. 😁 Just picked up a 2006 E320 CDI. BUT! It will be my parts/donor car for another [2005] CDI that I am currently in the process of having shipped. Clearly, I figure to be busy. Stay tuned!

MK4 Power Steering Leaking from Hard Lines

Nuje, in hindsight things can be pretty humorous. When you're deep into creating the story the humor just doesn't seem to be there:D

MK4 Power Steering Leaking from Hard Lines

Finally got around to completing the repair/replacement of the hard lines. I installed the short line's right side first and then the left side in the tower. I then installed the long line's left side in the tower (snugged down both lines there) and then installed the right side. I found that...

MK4 Power Steering Leaking from Hard Lines

New lines arrived*. Do/should I lube the o-rings (with steering fluid) or leave them dry? * Interestingly they're black. Haven't had any time to look closely at them to see if they're painted or what, but suspect that they're improved over the stock bare steel.

MK4 Power Steering Leaking from Hard Lines

I bailed myself out! I broke off the lines from the tower side to give me more working room (I'd already cut off the hanger mount for the cat- it was a rusty mess; that helped make room). I ended up using a 7/16"/11mm bolt extractor to get the bolt out. Had no issues with the clips. Also...

MK4 Power Steering Leaking from Hard Lines

Well... All was all going fine until I got to the T30 bolt on the tower part. Don't have enough range to swing the ratchet and the bolt is insanely stuck (needs a straight-on impact wrench, the kind you strike with a hammer) beat on it with a small hammer. I think I stripped the bolt head...

MK4 Power Steering Leaking from Hard Lines

Thanks! Kind of what I was thinking was the best strategy. New lines won't arrive until the 9th, in which case it'll be a while before I'm able to get around to this. Likely start pre-soaking stuff this weekend: no idea what the right side looks like yet.

MK4 Power Steering Leaking from Hard Lines

P2B, is the strategy to connect up the ends toward the right side of the rack first? I'm thinking that it would be easier to do any messing about on the other end of the lines (where they go into the tower(?).

MK4 Power Steering Leaking from Hard Lines

Bob, people replace these hard lines (see above). I have a set ordered and coming but am looking for insurance against the possibility that I'd have problems fitting a new set of hard lines. Regardless, I'd still like to know what the technical term is for this style of line end (I _think_...

MK4 Power Steering Leaking from Hard Lines

Bob, these are for the equalizer(?) hard lines on the rack itself (see my picture above that shows my corroded lines- BTW, I have verified that there's a crack right at the elbow of the lower line), not the pump lines.

MK4 Power Steering Leaking from Hard Lines

These lines were mentioned: picture below. I'd look to buy them as I think they'd get around the possible problem that krazykipa ran in to, but they only accept PayPal and I'm NOT going to sign up for an account (I had one but dropped it). Doesn't seem like this is anything exotic. Thinking...

    Power Steering Pump replacement

P2B, awesome, thanks for the reply! (I am, not unlike others, pressed for time and, like others, want the least complications as possible :p ) Oh yeah, the replacement lines are coming from someone up in Canada. You folks have it all figured out up there!
