"Powering trucks, trains and ships that drive industry, the fuel is commanding huge buy-it-now premiums in Europe. Beset by worker strikes over pay at French oil refineries that lasted over three weeks, the continent is struggling to be ready for a ban on imports from key supplier Russia that’s 3 1/2 months away. The US has the lowest seasonal inventories in data that began in 1982 going into winter."

£1.81 litre UK diesel
I'm going to show my age with this, but here's a interesting fact. Around the middle 70's I remember hearing gas was $5 a gallon in England. Gas was probably around .50 cents a gallon in Ca. then. That would make the U.K. 500% more expensive or put differently we were paying only 1/10th of the U.K.

Fast-forward

According to my very rough google math the liters to gallons & dollar conversion, £1.81 liter = $7.65/gallon. Fuel is well into the $6 range here in the centraal valley, Ca. Lines were forming last night (Sat.) @ costco. We have historically filled the (gas) van every sat night since forever and can't remember in recent years lines. What if anything does that mean? I dunno?...but if history repeats itself, and it does...

In 1973, with the oil embargo, gas shot up to $1.00 a gallon and we sat in lines for it.

Gotta wonder if thats soon on the horizon?

I do remember the 73 lines but through 12 year old eyes. @ around age15 in 1976ish I remember 59c/gal.(?) Although in 1987 I WAS buying regular @ 99c/gal.

As a teenager, circa 1970/71, I worked at the Yokohama, JP NEX gas station. Gas was 18 cents/gal., one Navy Day week special, it decreased to 14.4c/gal. In 1971, increased to 22.2c/gal. Circa 1972/23, Utah, Reg gas mid 20c/gal.

I paid $4.79 today, which was the cheapest I found. Everywhere else was 4.99-5.19

Driving through western NC and SC last week diesel ranged from $4.89 to $5.14 a gallon. It did not seem to matter if it was in the mountains or not. I filled the truck for $4.89 and still dropped over $100 into it. Got home and I could have saved a whole 2 cents/gallon!

As a kid, I remember gas wars where the price would approach 10 cents. Once I started driving in 75, gas was closer to 75 cents. I can remember when it went over $1. Most stations in Iowa started charging by the half gallon because their pumps were not set up for dollars.

I remember buying gas for <$1.00/ gal in Ca (just outside Sac). We even had a local Chevron that would drop prices every Wednesday by something like 20c/gal.

While running over to my daughter's yesterday I noticed one station in Lake Wylie at $4.77 and the one next door to that at $5.09. Plus the second station charges a dime upcharge for using a credit card.

$3.69 for RUG and $5.79 for diesel at the local Speedway. Interestingly enough, my electricity went down 2.5 cents a kWh.

Kinda glad that the diesel suburban didn't work out and I got the Ford Expy Max with V6 twin turbo instead.

Of course the Jetta still gets over 2x the MPGs of the Ford, so even with the 50% or so price premium, I'm still ahead driving it.

I agree that running the JSW is more economical than running my Ram, but 3500 miles on the JSW this summer was no where near as comfortable as it would have been in the Ram.

Here in my area, diesel is consistently over $1/gal. than unleaded. RUG is $4.49/gal, diesel $5.59/ gal. Gas prices may vary by 10-20 cents, but diesel never seems to move more than a few pennies. It’s a criminal racket.

What's really crazy is #2 fuel oil is $5.50 and I can get diesel at Bjs for 5.09.
Gotta wonder if it's all the phony manipulation/use of our oil reserves. Ive heard we are @ 60% of our high in 2011. The reserves have never been used to manipulate prices before (elections ... hint hint). The reserve was put in place for stability (war surplus)

Delivering a couple of thousand gallons to one station is cheaper than delivering 200 or 300 gallons to a few dozen residences or businesses. I assume the guy driving the tank truck is making $25/hour or more. And the tank truck itself is burning $5 or $10 worth of fuel every hour.

Back at 5.75+ for diesel at the local stations. Some lovely weeks below 5/gal this summer, but slowly creeping up since then.

Good news is that I just got a new job in Boston where my s/o lives (in person half time) so I’m down to something like 250mi/wk, as opposed to >700 when I was commuting to Worcester every day from the pioneer valley in MA. We’ll see!

I am cruising the Mediterranean right now and diesel prices are at about 6 or $7 a gallon in Italy. 1.99 Euro a liter. Gas is nearly the same price. But everyone here complains about their utility bills. Doubling.

Our Costco has the cheapest diesel in our area at $4.99 .... All others are about $5.25 .

Hmmmm ....maybe it's time for us to have a special op / military operation to take Saudi Arabia ..... we need cheaper fuel but nobody seems able or willing to do anything about it.

Diesel is running around $4.90 both in NC and SC in the Charlotte area. Best deal was a local grocery store just opened a new station and they had 40 cents off per gallon all weekend. Filled the Ram, my daughter's car, and our current rental for cheaper. rug ended up being $3.03.

Heard this AM that diesel has gone up $.70 in the last month in Massachusetts. Sure looks like it from what I'm seeing at stations.
