I'm not sure if this is the proper forum for what seems to be a VW red headed step child here on tdicclub. It's not a TDI yet but was born a VW diesel so hey fhey need loving too.

Getting new paint and upgrades

Wow very nice! I love the old ones too, wish I had the time to restore my ‘87 Cabriolet.

Sweet!
Might I have seen that cruising up/down the 101 around SLO or 5 Cities?
thanks
Its been in the central valley area for about 15 years since Ive owned it. I bought it out of the Chico area before that. I put a new fully built and balanced engine in it apx. ten years ago but it has less than 1000 miles on it. Giles injection pump, clutch, brakes and all hydraulics, tires and rims. The wife wants to drive it now, we just need to still get a few minor details done. Still looking for a turbo set up.

Very nice.
There are a couple caddies going up and down road around here. Always happy to see someone putting a little TLC into the old stuff.

We all become old stuff if we are lucky

This old 1.6 idi hammer and anvil diesel technology will still be running long after my TDI is dead and gone. We call the truck "peanut butter" after it's ability to run off of alternative fuel.

Sure nice to see such a nice restoration on that diesel pickup.

I drove an '83 VW Rabbit Diesel Pickup 300,000 miles - prior to replacing it with a 2013 VW JSW TDI 6M.
Pickup sold to a VW restoration guy at 5th and W in Sacramento (CA). He said he sold it for 12 grand!!
(Later, his son said he was "messin' with me")

Fair winds (I was Navy after college)

Something with a wastegate and a MTDI pump? Or am I thinking the wrong engine?

The 83 pickup is presently running the original 1.6 n/a. It's been 0.5mm overbored and balanced when rebuilt about 10 years back. It got the full Giles pump and injectors. Although stronger, isn't enough for the wife when jumping on Ca. freeways like our JSW 6m she's used to.

I started compiling a turbo conversion for this original 1.6 but have shifted direction to a full ahl/02j type swap. Mostly to preserve the original fully rebuilt 1.6. Why redo it at this point. So early turbo conversion is up for sale and I'll looking for the right swap, either mTdi or stand alone alh/5 or 6m

Conversion set up for sale

yeee haw, rollin' coal and shootin' guns... as a 92 year old acquaintance I know loves saying. And yes may be scary. I recently bought a car window decal for the wife but she refuses to have it put on.

When the turbo set up sells the I'll be scouting an alh conversion.

Sure will, thanks for the interest, makes it kinda' a fun challenge. Its got a new belt and water pump going on very soon just because it sat. more or less, for the last 10 years in the brutal 100*+ central valley garage. If my pd150 intake gets here in time that too is going on along with the timing put to .95mm from .88mm as Giles says to do on his pumps. My hopes it will make a noticeable difference meanwhile.

Just picked this air cleaner up from a 2016 charger. Should have the air flow needed. Ya think.

LOL The only power needed to run an old I.D.I. diesel is power to energize the starter and fuel shut off valve (power to hold the 12v electromagnet open to run).

A push start bypasses the starter. A rare earth magnet will hold a modified fuel shut off open to run. Add a little motor oil, vegetableoil, hell- peanut butter :poop:, to the cylinders and you've got combustion.. no electricity needed really, All mechanical. The original ICE hammer and anvil Fred Flintstone technology.

FWIW The turbo is on hold, actually up for sale. To many projects right now.
