Any idea what this part was originally designed to hold?

There is an empty space next to power steering reservoir. You see it if you pop the cover off. It looks like it was designed for a purpose... Any idea what? My guess is that it's for something with either the non-TDI versions or a similar non-US vehicle. Just curious if anyone knows.

It is for a brake assist pump on 1.8T models. Being turbocharged, under some conditions the 1.8T has no manifold vacuum. They have a vacuum pump to supplement when needed.
Awesome, thx. Knew it had to be something like that.

One of the few spots under the hood you can keep a beer without spilling it while wrenching.

The Passat is obviously the higher end model with a cupholder in the engine compartment!
