Hey all. I still have my 2000 TDi jetta. This short tale is about our recent RV trip north. Years ago I talked my buddy into buying a sprinter RV motorhome......so finally he reciprocated and convinced me to buy a used one also. I found a used one that I liked, ... So End of July we set out from Bay Area to head up north. Two sprinter RV caravaning to Montana. :)

Trouble hit the first day....Saturday . Friend's Sprinter threw a code... ESP, Anti lock brakes, Wheel sensors. etc. I had a scangauge, so we cleared it and went on our way. We made it to Bend Oregon at around 6 pm, ...... and his Sprinter engine went into LIMP mode. he could not go more than 30 mph. We tried to clear code, tried to find issue, even pulled a sensor out of the tranny, as some sites says its tranny sensor. No luck. Now we are stuck . WE cannot drive a RV at 30 mph for 1200 miles there and back on the freeway. Arugh. All mechanic shops closed for the weekend. But we figure we can explore Bend til Monday morning ....then bring sprinter into local Mercedes dealership. Further google on their website revealed Dealership does NOT service any sprinter engines.... So obstacle again.......
Then my brain juice turned on , and i thought.." why not contact Matt and Justin ? , They were both up here in Oregon, though they were in Portland area, more than 3,5 hours away. Maybe they can at least point me in right direction, or give some quick suggestions ?""

At 11 pm, Matt responded.... Asked me where I was... I said Bend OR. He laughed and said " Harry, You are in luck. I normally stay in Portland area, but this weekend we visting family in Redmond, just 10 miles away from Bend "" Wow... a miracle ! We made arrangements to meet nexxt morning... Another lucky break .... Matt said he was on vacation, so took all tools out of his TDI trunk.... but somehow he left his Autel computer in the trunk......so it was perfect...... He could talk to the engine computer and read all subsystems. Yay !
Next morning after breakfast at Cracker and Barrel, Matt and DeeDee shows up. They were a sight for sore eyes, looking happy and great ! We spoke a little, and Matt went to work. In a few minutes, he found out the meaning of the code.... then went under the RV, and saw it!!! The wheel sensor wire had come loose and laid on top of spinning axle, which cut the line, causing computer to not get a reading from that wheel. After quickly getting tools , he went to work .........and shortly fixed the problem, and cleared all codes... AND WE are good to go !!

Moral of story : Always always keep in contact with your friends... as you never know when you might need them to help you.

Matt and DeeDee..... thanks a trillion quadtrilliion for cutting short your vacay and driving down to help us out of this jam.... my friend Kang and his family, and my family, were amazed and shocked and extremely thankful for what you all did for us....... We were able to continue our trip !! :)

Also, Justin contacted me that same morning, and said he was on his way to his pals house, whom also happened to be a sprinter specialist. He offered to help as a backup, as needed. WOw.... big shout out to Justin old poopie for also having my back. :)

things in life changes and goes different ways, but sometimes, just sometimes, the stars all line up..... things fall in place........and miracles happen.

Continued story: After Matt saved us, I joked that now it was my turn, for my RV to breakdown. Bad joke., cause next day we boondocked at Cabelas, in Idaho, and in morning, i discovered that my RV house batteries were zero......completely drained. Turns out the sprinter engine was not charging the house batteries while we were driving. This time my friend knew what was wrong ( so I didnt have to call Matt and Justin again ). HE said the charge control solenoid was bad, and so we went out and bought one, then proceeded to do sprinter surgery in a Home Depot parking lot, tearing out the passenger seats, etc....and finally fixed it. Success.... !!! All the people we met were so nice and willing to help. We had strangers stop their vehicles to check on us. NICE.

Glacier National Park was excellent, and we arrived there on early morning , went in before 6 am since we had no tickets and no reservations.... but were able to get in line ( 2nd in line) at 5 am.........and at 7 am we got a camping spot..... one of the best IMHO . Apgar campground, near the lake.
We hiked, paddleboarded, swam, fished, saw bighorn sheep, hiked, kayaked, whitewater rafted, etc. Great times.

One final indignity though.... I had a new iphone 3 months new.........which I put in protective case on lanyard and took it to whitewater rafting......all was good. After one rapid, I jumped into calm waters to swim... and afterwards, when the guide pulled me up........the lanyard kept getting caught on the raft rope on the side....and after 4 tries, the lanyard BROKE, and they got me into raft, but my iphone was lost into river.:mad:

Anyone who is around the calm section after Pin Ball rapids of Flathead River, please look for my iphone...LOL

Matt , sorry I cant post our pics together, as they were taken with my iphone, which is somewhere still in Flathead River.... And none of the pics nor anything taken on trip was downloaded to cloud, due to bad cell connections... oh well.

Thanks again . We all got back safely last week.

Glad I could help, Harry! Was good luck that I happened to be visiting just North of Bend and had my Autel scan tool with me that talks to everything in Sprinters.

Small corrections--I'm not near Portland. At least not yet. Currently have a studio a few blocks from the beach in Newport, which is a couple hours West on US 20 from Bend.

The Scangauge, while a great tool, only supports the standardized OBD2 protocol, codes and live data. So, it actually can't talk to the ABS module anyway. There was a corresponding code in the transmission for not seeing the correct vehicle speed signal, but that was because like most modern vehicles, the ABS module generates a vehicle speed signal and sends it out as data packets on the powertrain CAN bus network for any module that needs that information to pick it up, rather than having individual vehicle speed signal wires going to each module.

But, when I scanned for codes using the Autel, which can talk to the ABS module, it became more clear that it was upset over not seeing both the rear wheel speed sensors. So, I just simply crawled underneath to see if there was anything obvious, and sure enough the rear ABS wheel speed sensor wires were not very well-secured and managed to start chafing against the rear u-joint and the driveshaft itself. So, a trip across the street to Home Depot later to get some butt connectors, wire strippers and crimpers plus zip ties (sadly, I did not have a lot of tools with me, but was lucky that I had the Autel to get me pointed in the right direction, verify the repairs and clear codes). Then went about peeling back the insulation, crimping the connectors on, taping things up and zip tying the harnesses to better prevent them from coming loose and rubbing on the driveshaft again.

Fixing the rear wheel speed sensors and clearing codes helped, but the transmission was in limp mode. Turned out Highender's friend who owns the RV had unplugged the main transmission electrical connector because the code in the transmission computer for a speed sensor error was not specific enough to isolate WHICH speed signal was the problem. When I crawled underneath once more to look at the connector for the transmission, it turns out Harry's friend failed to reseat the transmission's connector correctly before twisting the barrel lock. It didn't grab at all and was just sitting there loose. I re-oriented everything, reseated it again, twisted until it clicked and drew the connector in properly, cleared codes from the transmission computer and all was well!

Glad it was something that didn't require a hoist and a massive amount of time. I don't have a shop at the moment here in OR. Doing a little free-lance here and there while eyeballing some other options for work, but always feels good to save someone's day :)

So

I see Matt.... Newport not Portland ! Thanks for your detailed explanation..........and great coincidence you had the Autel computer on hand while vacationing. ..

We are still amazed and extremely grateful for you and Dee going out of your way. It was also a great teaching moment for the kids......... always make connections and brainstorm....

Many thanks again. !
