I got the 2003 jetta wagon running.
It's hard to find reverse and first.
Because it moves hard side-to-side.
What's the most likely problem?
Where should I look first?

Cables jamming up? Out of adjustment? Sticky shift lever bushings?

I would check out the lever on the trans between the cable and the gear selector on the trans. I have seen these bind up before. Whether that is the issue or not , if you can narrow things down by unhooking the cable here.

I have had this happen a few times. Make sure everything is working good on the engine end and lubricate if needed. Pull up the shifter boot cover and spray penetrating oil all over the internals and cables. Then I would sit in the car and move the lever back and forth hundreds of times. After I a while things start freeing up and working right again. It is either one of the shift handle parts or a cable sticking. You just have to work it loose unless you want to drop the exhaust and pull everything out and apart. One car I had got so bad I could hardly shift it anymore and after I lubed it all up it has been good for several years.

Thanks.
This car has sat for awhile.
I'll spray things down and see what cable is controlled by the right/left.
See if that's binding.
