Immobilizer issue

I have a 2002 VW Jetta Diesel
Love the car.
The battery was removed.
Now the immobilizer light flashes on the dash.
The car will start but shuts off immediately.

Here is the real issue.
A family member lost the keys, leaving me with only the valet key.
A friend gave me a FOB with an uncut key.
I had it laser cut at a dealership.

They want a fortune, it seems, to reprogram the ECU.
Plus I have to tow the car there.

Any suggestions?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes. It would start the car until the battery was removed. Now it just starts and stops
Unless the key was damaged inside, it should still work. It's come up several times in the forums. Several cases were reported to be recovered by leaving the key in the ignition with the ignition on for several minutes. If that works, and you want to use the folding key in the future, you can *carefully* open up the valet key and transfer over the RFID chip inside.

Disconnect the battery, touch the terminals together for a few seconds and then reconnect. That will put the gauge cluster into hard reboot and should fix the problem.
