I had a similar issue on my 03 Jetta (non wagon though). Rear driver side door wouldn't open from inside or outside. What happened was that the release cable that goes from the inside handle to the door lock got unhooked somehow.

Took me a while to figure that one out but finally did. It was one of these duuuuhhhhh moments. Sometimes it's good to check the obvious like the fuses. Guess what - fuse #19 was missing. Now I can blind other people again ;).
That did the trick! Loosened the 13mm nut and moved the assembly slightly backward. Doesn't need to move much - careful if you go to far you won't be able to shift into 2nd gear anymore.
Just a thought, if you make the shift adaptor slightly smaller it wouldn't hit the plastic arm of the shift...
