It's simply 2 small silver-colored rods sticking into the coolant when they aren't covered with coolant the light flashes. Clearly visible when you unscrew the top. No need to mess with cleaning them if the coolant is low unless they are covered with something.
Gas vs diesel are totally different animals as far as oil life is concerned. I would never try to extend a gas engine to more than 10k even under the best conditions.
I'm coming up on 500k and have been changing at 20k intervals since 70k when I got it. Still original turbo also. Same for the ALH NB before the Golf, sold that with only 400k on it. I do drive 90% of the time at 70-90mph though (all highway).
