VW parts do not sell 05-30 oil based on my VIN, it has to be 00-30.

i don't know whether it has been posted here before or not., anyway!

i normally keep 1 qt of 05-30 castrol (507) oil extra in trunk. last week i went to buy extra one as i was running little low and VW dealer parts dept told me, they do not carry 05-30 anymore!. my 2015 now requires 00-30. is it true that 2015 Passat TDI from dealer will be serviced by 00-30 only?

when did this change occurred and why?

-thanks

despite owner's manual says to use 05-30, Variable oil pump must not carrying enough oil to engine during warm up cycle, or maybe just seasonal.

Parts person told me most vw engines now use the same 0w30 oil, this oil. It is compliant with 507.00 which is the low ash requirement for DPF, that's what's important.

There are plenty of 507.00 compliant 5w30 motor oils still out there. I am not saying one way or the other that the 0w30 is not capable, but there are other options. Manufacturers update things all the time, and the parts departments try and limit what they stock. They did away with 505.01 5w40 for a 5w30 product instead, even though the 5w40 was still available through them for years.

thank you guys!, i was concerned about viscosity of 0w30 vs 05w30 for this new CR engine.

Yes, it most definitely is supplied by Mobil 1.

If you look at the design of the Vw 0W-30 bottle

and the design of the Mobil 1 bottle

You'll see the bottle is exactly the same, except for the color.

I had to do a oil change on my friend's BEW, so I asked at the dealer what they're using for the BEW/BRM 505.01 spec, and he showed me that same 0w30 oil. He said that word from VW higher-ups is that this is the stuff to use on any of the turbo'd cars from 2000 onward.

I was a little skeptical, literally asked "So, this is backwards compatible with the 505.01 spec?", and he turned around the bottle....and it's as if the label-makers knew what people would be asking:

0w-30 can provides better protection than 5w-30 for CR engines?

Gotta think that there was a some reason why VW went with a thinner-when-cold oil - my (uneducated) guess would be better protection at start-up.

Motul has an oil specific for 507 vag engines and it comes in both 0-30 and 5-30. Its one of the highest respected oil companies.

Yeah, 0w30 will tear up PD camshafts faster than a fat guy through donuts. :(

Thinner oils are for fuel economy, nothing more. They give up engine wear protection to get .004% better fuel efficiency and emissions. That's it. We see more wiped out (generally WORN OUT) engines nowadays with Xw20 oils than ever before. VAG is just the latest one to cave.

Yes, it probably does have some better characteristics for that first few seconds after a cold start. But literally the rest of the time the engine is running, it is worse for it. The ChryCo Hemi engines' camshafts in half ton pickups go flat with 5w20 (sound familiar?). But the 3/4 ton trucks that spec Xw40 do not. Same basic engine, different oil cap. Why? Because the emissions/fuel economy standards for pickups under 8500 GVWR are more strict, so to get that last wee bit in, they had to spec a thinner oil. But the HD Rams with 8600+ GVWR do not, so they get the thicker oil.

Ford has a similar difference of oil specs for their higher performance Coyote engines. They spec 5w50 instead of the standard 5w20, because they know the stresses the HO engines will get.

And engines that have a higher likelihood of oil consumption just go from bad to worse. Subaru in particular. But others are bad, too.

Not intending to threadjack, but taking Brian's comments a step further, would the VAG CR engines be better off with a DPF-friendly low SAPs/ash oil in the 5w40 flavor such as the Mercedes Benz 229.31 ("Formula M") oils? I believe most of the MB 229.31 oils are now 5w30, but there are still 5w40s out there.

FWIW, I just did oil change with Pentosin SP3 sticking 507.00 while under warranty.

I don't need any further convincing. 5-30 motul or pentacin for my cars.

MB has a higher spec 299.51 that has a 5w40 variant (it is also VAG 505.00, 505.01, and 502.00). Pentosin HP2 hits most of the marks for a great many cars so that is what we use here, with Pentosin SP3 (a 5w30) doing the rest, being 507.00 as well as some of the BMW specifications.

For the VAG 508/509.00 stuff (some of the newer gassers) we have yet a third option which is a Motul product since our Pentosin source does not have something. That is a 0w20.

As far as 5w40 (even a low ash variant) in a CR TDI, while it certainly is not likely to hurt anything, one of the main reasons the previous generations of VAG TDIs (VE and PD) do better with a thicker 40 oil is because they use a cam-on-bucket hydraulic lash adjusted flat lifter. Which is a pretty harsh metal-on-metal environment for motor oil. The CR TDI has no such valvetrain. It uses a little roller rocker that rides the cam profile instead. The lash adjuster is a little button that sits stationary in a pocket in the head. This is not unique, lots and lots of other OHC engines use this setup. So the CR is perhaps not "as" harsh on oil in that respect. However, they ARE pretty hard on oil in terms of thermal loads and soot, do to the DPF regen cycle. But they do not seem to have an issue with the 507.00 5w30 motor oils (and they may not have any issue with a 0w30, either). At least, of all the crap I have seen broken on CR TDIs, the engine proper seems to be perfectly fine. Even after several hundred thousand miles. I still even put it in all the deleted CR TDIs (and that list grows almost weekly now).

The French are big on lubricants, besides Motul, they are known for using flavored lubricants.

I’m a little late to this party… but I just changed my oil and picked up oil and filter from VW dealership and he brought out Castrol Edge 0w-20 and I said I wanted the VW brand oil and he said this is what they’re using now. Is this the right stuff?

EngineeringExplained-guy answered this question just recently (with to-be-noted caveat/disclaimer that he puts right at the start of the video - Mobil1 sponsored the video).

With some reference earlier in the video to engine efficiency afforded by the thinner oils.

tldr: If it says 507.00 on the jug, you're good to go.

The entire point of this thread was that thinner oil kills these engines faster than a fat man through a box of doughnuts.
It's only about fuel efficiency to make a company grasping as emissions straws to look good.
Vw has no care in the world about the health of the engine as long as marketing looks good.

This didn't come from VWoA nor VWoWolfs. Mercedes, BMW and VW were pressured by the EPA to change oil specs from 5w30 to 0w30. If I remember correctly, BMW changed the specs for all their 2007+ diesels to 0w30.

Its funny, some dealerships have panicked that I still use diesel 5w30. My reply is ask them to reference the specs for EA288 or EA189 vehicles with VWoUK, VWoWolfs, VWoBrazil, VWoEgypt, VWo[any country except US] and those Volkswagens all say 5w30.

If its good enough for the fine people in Germany, thats what I will put in my Passat NMS.
