Well it finally happened the Healiner is falling down in the back of my car. The question I have is how much of a pain in the butt is it to pull the headliner and replace it and where is the best place to get a replacement. I have the Bently publishing service manual but they dont really have and good info on removing the headliner. I guess the heat is really starting to tear up the interior of this car. First the buttons on the radio peel and now the headliner is falling down!

Replacing is a royal pain. Too many fasteners to break and getting the old one out and new one in is a tight fit.

Suggest you go to a automotive interior specialist. A new headliner from the dealer is about $200. Get it yourself and provide it to the shop. Let them do the labor. It's worth the cost in avoided frustration.

2006 Headliner Issues (cont.)

My Jetta headliner shrank at both rear pillars and the cloth is dropping from the ceiling (I tried to repair with headliner glue :(). Called local dealer (Lindsay VW in Sterling, VA) and they told me that MAYBE (contingent on how often I've brought the vehicle in to dealer for service (I don't)) after submitting photos to VW that they MIGHT cover 50% cost. (Their exorbitant cost is $1500!)

Local body/headliner shop in Manassas, VA quoted <$500 so we'll see what kind of job they do.

Can you people just sometimes keep your problems to yourself?? I read this, and the next time I went into my car I saw the headliner pulling up at the c pillars and around the rear light... Sheesh

Now I got to see if my fix with glue will hold or if I have to get it repaired... most probably get it repaired...

Ignorance really is bliss :p;)

+1 on that one. Mine is doing the same, I got approximately same quote so most likely I will let the independent upholstery shop do the job. Plus than I can do velor or cow hide :D

Here in the Texas heat, I tell my wife to always leave the window cracked to let some of that hot air out. We've already had the peeling radio buttons problem.

NEVER EVER clean/rub or even touch the headliner. In the hot climate like we have in Australia the foam layer used in headliner breaks down and then it's falling down on the driver head! We have this mostly with Euro cars and with some Japs. I would find a professional headline repair to fix it.

2006 Jetta headliner

I just bought my 2006 Jetta TDI knowing that the headliner was separating from the pillars in the back of the car. I loved the car otherwise and it was a great deal so I bought it anyway, assuming I could fix it myself. THEN after I bought it I noticed that the headliner as sagging and had pulled away from the rear reading lights. I tried 3M spray glue to no avail. It was a waste of time because the foam is all there is for the glue to stick to, and it just pulls away again. So, I called around and found only one place in town that would do the job - that's because of the side pillar airbags and the sunroof - and it will cost $500. I figure I would have purchased the car for the same price or more anyway, so I'll just have it done. The people at Tx Auto Tops told me that they get a lot of VWs (Jettas), jaguars, and Mercedes with this issue. I'm in Austin Tx and my car came from the Houston area.

I went by my dealer last week about my falling headliner. He told me that the glue used does not fair well in the Houston humidity. I have never had headliner problems on a 4 year old vehicle. Has anyone had any luck obtaining any reimbursement from VW? The dealer said I should call VW.

Headliner

I just took mine to a repair shop, it will cost me about $350.00 to get it done right. The same thing happened, on the back C pilars it started shrinking, then then on the back reading light it droped it was just a real headache. I will not take my care to a VW dealership any more, all the do is overcharge and if your car is out of warranty will not help you. On a four year old the headliner falling down like this is not heard of. I have a Ford F-150 1998 and the headliner is great.

Similar problem here. Radio buttons were fixed on warranty. Mirror buttons and headliner now releasing.

I just noticed the headliner in the back of my Jetta shrinking around the back light. At least this is a warranty item. Hopefully the dealership will get it right the first time.

Your VW warranty on that ran out at the 3 year mark. Unless it is really like an '07?

I bought the car in 04/07. The warranty is valid till April of next year or until the warranty mileage runs out. The car has only 27.6k on it now. The warranty is 4 years or 50k miles on the basic warranty. I find the headliner issue supprising since this car is garaged most of the time.

In April of this year my wife was with a co-worker looking for a used car to replace her car that had been recently totalled. The were at Rod East Volkswagen when she "found" the car that she really has always wanted, a Volkswagen Certified Pre-Loved/Owned, 1 owner, stealership serviced, 2006 Jetta TDI. We did the normal tap dance with the salesperson and finnally closed the deal with the understanding of what Certified Used means and a careful inspection, we traded in our 1 0wner 2005 Dodge Magnum R/T that averaged 17.5 mpg. My wife drives an average 600 miles a week so this really made sense.

I quickly found this website and started to learn about our new used car and its likes and dislikes. 2 days after purchase I started the car and saw on the odometer that it was needing service in 100 miles. So not trusting the stealership I looked at the air filter, signs of a recent DSG transmission fluid change etc. I went back to the stealership and asked for all service records that showed that all maintainence services had been performed at the 40K mile mark. They keep the car for 2 days while they changed, replaced and upgraded what should have been done to be a "real" certified car. Needless to say, they were not to happy with us.

In mid August my wife gave me permission to drive her car. I got into the Jetta and noticed that the headliner was loose and pulling away from the dome light and pillars. I asked my wife to stop by the stealership and get an appointment to get it repaired under warranty. The claimed was denied because the Jetta was out of warranty. The car had 50,915 miles on it. They did offer to share the cost and it would "only" cost us $500.00. By chance 2 days later Volkswagen of America called the house about a customer satisfaction survey and boy did they get a load.

Milage had noting to do with the headliner falling apart. If my wife had another job and only drove to her office we would have had only 45K on the car. The problem is bad headliner materials and adhesives. 3 days later we got a call from Volkswagen of America telling us that under further review our claim was resonable and would be honored. We called and made an appointment to have a new headliner installed. We were pleasantly surprised when we picked up the car. The Jetta had a new headliner that included a new overhead information console, sun visors, and the Oh S**t handles. Once again though the stealership service writer made an off the cuff comment about how we cried to Volkswagen and got our way.

Lessons learned so far about our Jetta is to stand your ground and make the stealership honor thier claims.

I can't help but shake my head when I story like yours, MrMike. The dealers really ruin the VW experience.

And while my headliner isn't loose yet, the fabric from the rearmost trim piece in my 05 Golf has begun to dance in the wind. Since it's a solid backing and not foam I'm hopeful spray glue will fix it.

I noticed my headliner coming down last week.
sent an email to voa and they called the next day.
they had me take it to a dealer to look at it and I just got off the phone with them now.

The car is out of warranty due to time bought it in july of 06 new, and it only has 35k miles on it. Said they would consider replacing it under warranty after they hear from the dealer.

no idea what they will say, but for the rest of you can't hurt to call and ask.

Replaced for free

I took my '06 in to get the hubs checked out. Without me saying anything the mechanic said they have had issues with the headliner and that they would replace it for no charge.

Replaced for Free

I just bought an 06 Jetta with the headliner issue. I called VW Customer Care and explained that I read some were being replaced. I took it to the dealer as VW requested and with in 2 days they called me and said they would cover the entire cost of replacing it. My jaw hit the ground! The windshield had to be removed for them to replace the headliner and it was done by a local body shop through the dealer.

This is my first VW and will not be my last.

Why would that be relevant for something like a headliner? Are they going to void your warranty because you didn't give them the opportunity to put the wrong oil in your car or over fill it?

Run as fast as you can from that dealer.......................

I've got over 101,000 and I'm in the process of working with VWoA to replace it. Took it to the dealer I use and they said they would do everything they could to get it covered. I hope to find out tomorrow.

my 06s headliner is coming down as well, I haven't been to the dealership yet and I haven't made any calls to VWoA. I am not the first owner and was wondering if anyone has any idea what my chances of getting this taken care of is? Any word on how the VW of Tulsa is as far as maint, using proper fluids and techniques, and general customer service?

VW called me today to inform me that they are, as a 1 time courtesy, going to replace my headliner free of charge. I am not the original owner and they know that.

Any word on how the VW of Tulsa is as far as maint, using proper fluids and techniques, and general customer service?
Proper fluids: Never used incorrect fluids or incorrect quantities for me on the free services. (+1 point)
Techniques: They would not let me watch them. (-1 point)
Customer service: About the same as testicular cancer. (-5 points) The one service advisor that actually was polite and knowledgeable moved to Audi Tulsa, which VW Tulsa lost due to poor performance. Audi Tulsa is located across the street at the Land Rover dealer.
Maintenance: Left half of the screws out of my belly pan (-1 point), gave me the replacement screws for free when I complained after I got under the car at 42k (+1 point), tightened the oil filter cap at least 5Nm too much (-1 point), cross-threaded the belly pan bolt in the rear middle so now it won't tighten all the way now (-1 point), made me sit and wait an hour while the parts guy "forgot" to bring the part to them (-2 points) and the part took all of 15 seconds to install (-5 points), and they didn't even apologize (-1 point).

Also, I will point out that their "40,000 mi service" includes things that should never be put in your TDI, such as oil additive, and it costs a hair shy of $400.

I would stay away from them unless they're doing warranty work. Their mechanics are probably not that bad, but in their haste to get more jobs in (since they get paid per job), they don't do as good a job as I can and overlook more anal things like torquing the oil filter cap to 25Nm.

P.S. The concept of an appointment is lost on these people - usually I wait around 45 minutes before my car even moves, and then 30-45 minutes from there.

P.P.S. There's a guru in Mannford, if you ever need anything major done (TB, for example).
