Default Gear shift vibration

Does anybody else's '98 Jetta TDi gear shifter vibrate and have the most annoying rattle to it. the rattle is just loud enought to be nerve wracking.. I at first thought it was just the shift knob, but it seems that it is the entire shift mechanism. if I touch the shifter the rattle stops. but sometimes I dont want to drive with my hand on my shaft(he he) shifhet. sorry... how does one fix this? or does a shifter upgrade solve this? It sometimes drives my batty , so I think I want to do something about it now.

Thanks Eric B.

Sounds to me like you have a loose shifter or something. Search around on here and you will find information on how to adjust this. It might not be the problem, but it is a good place to start (free...just your time involved). If you need a hand finding some info, PM me...I'll search around a bit if you can't find anything.

Had it in my '98 Golf, dealer failed to fix it twice until they replaced the gearlever, problem solved.
