If I had to make an educated guess, I would say all of the A4 ECU's were/are equipped with immobilizer.

Hopefully someone that actually knows will chime in.

maybe some of the very early 99.5? Or earlier beetles?

I believe some of the euro models had no immob.

If my memory serves me correctly:

1999.5-2001 - IMOB II
2002 - current - IMOB III

The way I understand it;

Jetta/Golf MkIV get the ALH engine
with no immo from sept.98 to may 99.

All Beetles to may 99.

Which means all 80 pin ECUs.

Immo with key reader starts after may 99 with 121 pin ECUs.

Immo keys

As long as you have a key that works, it's real simple to tell a immo setup. At the base of the switchblade, there is a "W" engraved on the key. If it has a slash through the W, it is a non-immo key. If there is no slash, it does have immo.
