Default Which 507.00 Oil?

Hey guys,

I was wondering which oil you guys would recommend using for this?

Over in the UK we can get the following oils. (All prices are for 5L except for the Castrol Edge which is 4L)

Castrol Edge 5w30 - 46.10 ($73.98 USD)
Mobil1 ESP 5w30 - 39.58 ($63.51 USD)
Gulf Formula GVX 5w30 - 39.36 ($63.16 USD)
Millers Oils 5w30 - 55.94 ($89.77 USD)
Amsoil 5w30 - 58.45 ($93.79 USD)
Fuchs Titan GTI 5w30 - 43.38 ($69.61 USD)

I've heard good things about Amsoil, but are they worth the extra money?

The Castrol and Mobil1 appear to be the most easily obtainable.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Given those prices, I'd use either the Mobil or the Fuchs, pocket the savings and spend it on some good English ale....

I can't get the Mobil 5w30 up here, but if I could, it would be my choice.

As you're in England could I suggest this link

http://www.national.co.uk/oil-vehicle-search.aspx

They do oil changes with 507 spec oil (of your choice) that quite often are lower in price than if you bought a can of the stuff yourself along with a fresh filter. For my car they suggested Castrol Edge 5W-30 (507) with filter for 38. My car inc filter takes about 4.5 litres so it's not hard to see they're doing it for cheaper than I could do it for myself.

Yeah, well I've just been told that there is a VW Trade Parts Specialist near me. They stock the Quantum oil that VW use (in the UK), and it's the Castrol Edge oil with a different name.

From a Trade Parts Specialist shop, I can get 5L for 32, so it's more than likely I'll go with them at that price, seeing as a genuine OEM oil filter is only about 5.

Regarding Mobil1 - this was actually the first oil I decided against. Some reading on the internet shows that Mobile1 only matches the American standards of fully synthetic. From what I've read, the American standards aren't as high as the European standards, meaning European standard, fully synthetic oil tends to be better. I'm not sure how much it will matter really

Thanks for the suggestions guys

I've been using Amsoil for years in all my cars/trucks/cranes with great success. I am i firm believer however in sticking with the same brand (not switching brands every oil change)...so if i was you i'd pick what is the most easily obtainable, and what does the best job at meeting the requirements.

The only country where this still applies is Germany. (Called Synthetic Technology there). Elsewhere, US, UK, rest of Europe except Germany, it would be called synthetic.

It says 0.8% S.A. Looks like VW approves 0.8%. The highest Ash in approved oil to 507.00 I found before was 0.7%.

I just left Wiesbaden, Germany and i visited all 6 VW dealerships before i pick the dealership to do my services. Three of the dealerships used Mobile 1 ESP and the other two used Shell Helix Ultra 5w30. So i think Mobil 1 ESP is really good considering the Germans do two years or 20K Miles.
