Marcus, I'd take the 8 MPG hit and drive the M550xd if it came over here.
Cheers

Yet, those cafe regulations will require the sale of cars like this so that they may sell their other offering, or at least here's to hoping that is the case...

The 62 mpg is combined fuel economy. I think the 550xd is around 36 mpg combined.

Ah yes, Euro 535d M Sports get 50.4mpg Imp/43.2mpg US combined so I was off on my numbers...I'd still take the 20 mpg hit to drive the speedy 5! (edit, just saw the stated figures for the M, yes....around 36 combined)
Not sure why the 62 mpg 1er is so special, the 320d ED gets 68.9 mpg combined, so it's the most efficient BMW model at the moment.
Cheers

According to BMW's site, the 320d ED gets 57.4 mpUSg combined. It acheives 67.2 on the highway. I'm not sure where the 68.9 number came from, but I remember it too.

UK... Imperial gallons... but I wish the 2-liter Efficient Dynamics Edition was available in the 1-series. Having the 1.6 is an interesting addition though... that's Golf Bluemotion fuel economy!
