Default What's your most efficient speed for max MPG?

My 2011 Jetta TDI seems to like 60 MPH for max MPG. I routinely get 50 MPG+ at 60 MPH. At higher speeds (65/70) the mileage drops to 45/46 MPG. What are others seeing?

My last fill up was 47.6mpg going 70mpg with 85% highway.

I bet I'd hit 50mpg easy with 60'ish to 65'ish.

I have a Scanguage. My instantaneous mileage for my 2011 DSG is best at 80 kph or 50 mph. At that speed it is about 65 mpg but that drops off to about 50 at 60 mph. My combined city/highway/gravel road mileage over a tank is about 43 mpg.

I am curious about a scangauge and where is connects in the car (2011) and where I can get the gauge as well. I was under the impression the VWs were unique in their protocol and were readable using VAG COM only. Is this not the case anymore?

Its never been the case in regards to using a scangauge. Scangauge gets data from the obd2 port.

To get the best fuel economey you need to know at what rpm, peak engine torque is developed. Once you know that then it is just a matter of setting speed with rpm selected to the gear you are in.

I have not seen a torque chart for these TDI yet. Does anyone know where we can look at one?

On my Dodge Cummins, I set the engin at 1750 rpm in 6th gear and will get around 23 mpg, and this is a 1 ton truck.

The best mileage speed depends on many factors.

My best mileage on a smooth highway is at 1600 rpm in 6th gear, but the best torque on the TDI is at about 2000.

Here a link to a torque curve ... http://www.tech-karma.com/sites/defa...1-kw-nm-c1.png

What is your rpm at your best mileage speed?

Default Differences in F E

What must be consider is the big differences in RPMs between the DSGs and the manual 6 MTs per mile!

There is no way that the DSGs can obtain the F E of the late manual 6 MTs.

i think the dsg is almost spot on with rpm of the manual. I do agree that manual will put out better mpg IF the manual driver can drive it right.

DSGs have a ratio of 2.31

6 MTs have a ratio of 1.98

At 96 KPH, the DSG is turning 1933

At 96 KPH, the 6 MT is turning only 1657

A difference is favour of the 6 MT by 275 revs

Because of the gearing, the 6 MT will do better

The 2009 gearing of the 6 MT was different, and they were closer to equal.

The '09 6 MTs were geared 2.23, and yes they would still do slightly better F E wise.

My read out says something like 74 mpg at 40 mph, but not sure if that's right.. nor would I want to drive around at 40 mph all the time... My car is still not really broken in so I've only once tried to see what fuel economy I could get out of it. I'm waiting until my break in allows me to drive the way I want to drive to get the fuel economy. Happy with the 36-45 mpg I'm getting now...

Edit: mind you this was an instant read out, and on a flat road with no ac, but I did maintain the mpg for a few mins...
