Chains/Spiders for JSW with 17" Tires?

Just read a thread on best solution for JSW in Snow. I had a disaster experience in Tahoe last Thanksgiving with chains (installed properly) that were moderatley effective , but ended up scratching my front rims and were a ***** to get off. The issue with the strut clearance is really a problem with the 17" Tires, and I don't want to buy a pair of 16" tires that I have to swap every winter just to travel to the snow. So what has worked best for you folks with JSW with 17" tires? The dealer recommended Spiders but they are $$$.

Considering the damage potential from chains, I wouldn't think $475 for a set of Spikes Spiders is $$$. Frankly, it's pretty reasonable and is your best bet. I saw a set on a car at Snowshoe Mtn this past winter. He made it to the top.
