Default Fuel Mileage on a 2002 TDI Jetta

I have a 2002 Jetta TDI. I have not been able to beat 43 MPG per tank on this car yet. I have been as low as 40 and as high as 43 MPG. I drive about 15 miles to work on the highway. Please let me know if this is normal. Please let me know.

Thanks,
2002 TDI

2002 TDI,

I had a 2000 Golf TDI 5-speed and my fuel economy really improved after I hit 15,000 miles (3-5 mpg). Improved mileage will also come with taking your foot out of it too. I would rather put my foot into it and lose 2-3 mpg though . Good luck to ya.

Well, I have a 2k2 blue jetta and with my work commute coming in around 4miles each way, 3days a week, and then driving no more than 20 miles in any given trip to the sorrounding areas, at various speeds ranging from 40 to 75, I get roughly 42 to 43MPG non vented, fill it up with 12gallons give or take, and run it to the beep, getting 525 to 545 miles per fillup.

I have right at about 10500 miles in my 2K2 Golf and I have yet to break 42MPG.
I'm usually 39-41. Yes, I push it, but even when driving lightly I don't see more than 41.

We got a new 2002 Jetta a couple of weeks ago. One 150 mile highway trip, everthing else around town. 5 miles each way to work every day. Just filled up for the first time: 12.1 Gal for 573 miles (47mpg).

I've got an 02 with just a couple under 18K Mi. I'm getting about 51 with mixed driving (auto-x, driving to GF's house, work, etc.) The worst was before 12K, now I can't get below 45 mpg, even when I drive like an idiot. The best was 735 miles on under 12 gallons (11.666 gallons) on a road trip to MB,S.C. Just wait, it only gets better!

BTW, up'd at 10K around middle of March.

01 Golf 5 spd, just hit 10k miles. 39-41 mpg. Mixed driving, about 10 miles to work, 7 is freeway.

Even on long freeway rides, I just don't get as high mileage as other TDI's.

So far my '02 has seen a low of 39.1MPG and a high of 49.9. The 39.1 was trying to keep up with a chipped B5 Passat 1.8T on a run to Detroit from Minneapolis. The 49.9 was this past weekend motoring around the northwoods of WI and the UP (my 49.9 run even included about a gallons worth of gravel roads). The trend seems to be it's getting better with time. Prior to this weekend the best I had seen was 47MPG. I usually get 43-44 in town going to/from work.

2002 Jetta GLS TDI - 5 Speed - 4,200 miles - factory oil yet - Mixed driving is a consistent 47 MPG - Pure highway at 80~85 MPH with air on to sub-zero getting 51.7 MPG. I expect this to go up with Delvac 1 and more break in time. I have not used one drop of oil yet and everything is stock yet as the car is less than two months old! I do not baby the throttle and have driven her pretty much as I would a gasser ( although the R's are a lot lower - I keep her at or below 3K RPM - 80 MPH @ 2,650 RPM). I can't believe all of the low MPG's people are reporting! I suspect an inconsistent re-fueling method that doesn't involve venting! I can't see how an accurate MPG can be established without venting every fill up right to the brim! There is just too much error relying on the nozzle, foam and pressure. I have never had an average worse than 45MPG since day one regardless of driving style.

I had a 2002 Jetta Sedan 5 speed and was averaging 45 mpg during the first 10,000 miles. Right out of the box it was getting 45+ and never changed. High mileage tank was about 51 and low was about 43. Most of this mileage was during late fall and winter.

I now have a 2002 Jetta Wagon 5 speed with about 2600 miles on it and am seeing about 40 mpg average. The best tank has been 43 mpg, and that was with two kayaks on top, a load of gear in the back, and cruising at 75 mph+ with a Smart Box installed. It doesn't seem to matter how I drive, I'm getting about 40 mpg. I'm using the same fuel, same fill practices, same tire make and model on the two cars. The main difference I can see is one is a wagon and one is a sedan, but I wouldn't expect a 5+ mpg drop because it is a wagon.

Any comments?

I got 44mpg on the first few tanks. Now at 4,000 miles I've been getting 45/46. 17 miles commute, about 12 freeway.

Colleague at work with 5spd Golf TDi GL and 40 mile commute : 53mpg.

My 2002 Jetta automatic is getting 35-38 mpg driving around town. Only 2600 miles on it so far. I'm please and figure it will only get better as time goes on! Have not really had it out on any long trips yet.
