Default Check engine light at 2100 miles

Well, this is how the honeymoon ended, Just had the engine light turn on at just 2100 miles.

There seems to be no different on how the car drives. Know is time for me to play russian roulette with the dealer and hope they can get it right and not mess something else up! Ahhh! should have gone with a toyota!

It would have been nice if the display had a diagnostic screen that would display the code. I mean HOW HARD IS THAT?

Time to look into a vag-com i guess! I was just hoping getting one could wait at least 5 years.

I hear you, but it seems like a lot of money, specially if one only cares about retreiving a fault code. I started a new thread on the "scanners" section asking for options, If you can help (or anyone for that matter) in this area please reply.

If all you are interested in doing is reading and retriving codes, you can get a $20 eBay cable and use a shareware version of VCDS. Getting generic interfaces to work can have a whole ball of issues in and of itself, however you gotta pay to play.

Make sure you get a cable that supports CAN bus based cars.

Well, if the car manufacturers were to make the in-car display show the fault code, 99.5 % of the people driving the cars wouldn't have a clue as to what it meant anyway. Plus, the dealers wouldn't be justified in charging $$$$ to do a code scan.

I've been saying this for years and VWoA should be providing the subscription at their expense. It's only fair

I had a similar event early on. The dealer found the turbo pressure was a little low. They had me bring it in a couple days later to check it out. They could not find any problem and the pressure was fine. They talked to VW and concluded that a vacum line might have been crimped and was corrected by them when they had taken it off and reconnected it. In any-case, that was thousands of miles ago and no problems since. Hope you are as fortunate.

If the message were displayed on the MFD, I think most drivers would either panic or ignore it, just like most ignore the CEL.

A dealer will charge you a diagnostic fee of probably 1 hour labor (~$85+), plus parts and labor to fix the issue if the warranty doesn't cover it. So retrieving codes 3 or 4 times will pay for the Vag cable.

To say nothing of all the "neeat" things you can do/modify with one.
I think being able to raise/lower the windows from the remote is worth the price of admission alone.

Unless of course you have an ethical problem with supporting the foreign knockoff's over the developer that invested dearly to produce a very valuable tool.

By that logic, perhaps we should all be driving a Kia. It will get you there...for less!

Should an 09 owner get a HEX-USB+CAN Interface or a Micro-CAN Interface ?
There is a $100 difference in pricing; I'm ready to pull the plug but debating between those 2 options!
Any feedback from owners of either?
Thanks in advance!!
OP, sorry to stray off topic, but any feedback on this topic should be of use to you also!

There's nothing wrong with using a $20 eBay cable. Ross-Tech releases a shareware version of the software that allows the reading of codes. If they didn't want people to do that, they wouldn't release a shareware version that does that. If you want to do anything cool though, you have to pay up.

I'm the biggest proponent of actually buying the software if you can, however the OP stated that he was interested in a cheaper option. I presented one to him. Nowhere did I advocate using anything that is a "knockoff" nor anything that would violate Ross-Tech's copyright.

Not off topic at all.

If all you are interested in doing is working on your own car, you can get by with a Micro-CAN interface. If you want to be able to help people out with previous chassis cars that use the K line for communication, you will want to get the HEX+CAN interface. That's the biggest difference. The Micro-CAN will work on all 2005.5+ Jetta/Golf chassis cars. Earlier Golf/Jetta/Passat cars require the K-Line interface, so you'd want to go with a Hex+CAN.
