I didn't watch the videos but I've seen that show before. It's pretty much the worst auto review show in Canada.

That's awesome. Spoon-feeding the mases on the advantages of diesel engines. A couple of years ago, diesels didn't even exist for the people that did the reporting..................

Not too badly done - overall a good report on Diesels.
* Anything positive on Diesels is a good thing.*

They could have maybe replaced a few people???? I won't say any more on that

it's a positive report, aimed at dullards and deftly delivered by a bad show. but the redheads pretty cute.

Must they always mention the "diesel is dirty and loud" fallacy?

please remember who this is aimed at: the ignorant masses, of which are not a part (to them the diesel is still a scary proposition). the four fine folks who got to drive these cars are only one stage above the ignorant masses.
aye to Lacey Elliott being a cutie-pie.

I watched the first of 3 parts again, since that's the basis of my contention of inaccuracies. The most glaring was the guy's explanation of Diesel fuel being "less-refined" than gasoline. *** does that mean?? And his explanation of "since diesel is less-refined.... then... therefore... therefore... and voila -- Diesel gets better mileage", all the while gesturing with twirling his hands, made even my head spin.

There is no credible history that states that Rudolf Diesel intended to use peanut oil by design of his very first prototypes, yet this legend has been so widely cited that is has been taken uncontested as fact. It is a legend I wish would die but never will, just like the cliché of smoky, smelly loud Diesels

FACT: His first engine ran on coal dust and,
FACT: after a catastrophic explosion of the prototype installed at the facilities of Maschinenfabrik Augsburg (present-day M.A.N. -- the N referring to Nürnberg came later as a result of a merger with a Nuremberg machine company),
FACT: later engines used a petroleum distillate as fuel that would be closest to modern-day kerosene, introduced into the cylinder through an air-assisted blast.

A good read states that a French builder's of Diesel's engine, ostensibly under licence from Diesel, demonstrated an engine that ran on peanut oil at the 1900 World Exposition in Paris, but without Rudolf Diesel's knowledge or sanction at that time. Historical books about Rudolf Diesel and his engine by Sass, Lyle Cummins, etc. make no connection between Rudolf Diesel and peanut oil or any biofuel for that matter.

For the Jetta TDI, they kept saying that the city EPA rating is 41 mpg. Isn't that the highway rating?

The UK rating for the same car we have here is 52 highway, we rank it at 41. The US and UK have the same speed limits as far as highways go.

Which I believe since I know two 09s that get 40-41 in mixed session; and the "word record" 58mpg was set in the Guiness book by an American couple.

Despite having some of the slower speed highways, we sure do drive cars crappy if others get that kind of economy out of the car reliably.

Source: http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/#/new/je...l-consumption/

140HP 2.0L TDI CR is rated UK MPG 35/52/44 city/hwy/combined

I'm not sure if it's Imperial Gallons or US gallons they're using, I want to say it's US gallons.
