I read their website a couple of times and they are not exactly open about their driving techniques to achieve such low fuel consumption.
In my world of science everything has to be reproducible by others. All the details need to be published and this is not the case with the Taylors.
It's difficult for anyone to reproduce the exact "feel" someone has for the accelerator pedal. Likely, you could find out how the Taylors do it by practicing/learning for yourself; they've done this kind of run many times in the past...

DPM - thanks for the link but it does not show the details of how it's done. So, if the facts are not there and it's not transparent to me and others then it's along the lines of a magic trick. The details are deliberately hidden from the audience. Only the amazing result is shown at the end.

Fuel Economy: Which car? There have been nine of them!

How about a fuel economy competition in which 100+ mpg is not enough for first? The results are not yet published, but there are some bits of information here starting on page 48 or 49.

That's my Sonett in the middle of the vintage group, 44+ mpg.

More here from about post 148 or so

Default uber mileage possible

I don't know the details of the competition, but it is pretty easy to average in the mid to high 60s (us gallons) by driving 38 to 40 mph. Do some coasting down hills and it goes into the low 70s. This is with my 1997 Jetta tdi, 5M (totally stock). I measure the minute to minute mpg with my scanguage, and it is then confirmed with paper and pencil when I fill up.

duke out

A bit too sceptical there, I'd say.

If a tradesman- a plumber for example- comes to your house and (say) fixes a leak. Just because he doesn't tell you exactly how he's done it doesn't make him a fraud. It's a skill. And anyone can learn it...
